Buddhism becomes important
Hinduism was the first large religion in the Khmer Empire and most of the Hindu Rulers of the Khmer Empire disliked Buddhism as it made them look like there wins and power from Visdhnu was fake. If the people thought that, they would stop believing in the Rulers and start/ follow there own rules. So once Buddhism became important it could affect the society and the politics. Some people believe that an aspect of why the Khmer Empire fell was because of the constant different religion changes. -

End of the Khmer Empire
There are many different possible reasons for the end of the Khmer Empire. Some of the reasons are the Black Death which killed alot of the population, there were many foreign invasions ( such as the Thias in 1594), the break down of the irrigation system ( which meant water couldn't be delivered to many parts of the empire, there was no taxation system, the Kings lived in luxury, they used all the resources and the cost of war was very high. -
The Thais defeated the Khmers
In 1594, the Thais defeated the Khmers and Cambodian became a vassal state of the Thais. The Thais pushed and took back the land the Khmers took of them and when the Thais took over the Khmer Empire, the capital city moved from Angkor to Phnom Penh. It was the Thais defeat that helped influence the end of the Khmer Empire. This is because, the Thais made Cambodia a vassal state and because Cambodia was the origin of the Khmer Empire and the Thais had taken that away from them.
