The U.S. and Japan sign the gentlemen's Agreement
U.S.-Japanese agreement, in which Japan agreed not to give passports to Japanese people who wanted to go to the U.S., except for business and professional men. In return president Theodore Roosevelt agreed to urge the city of San Francsico to stop segregation of Japanese and white children. The issues were prejudice to Californians who feared that Japanese immigrants would gain control of most of the good farming land. -
