Timeline of First Natrions in Canada

  • Period: Jan 1, 1500 to

    Fur Trade

    -mercury leaked into environment and people, causing mercury posining ( hat makers used mercury )
    -beaver depopulation, they were hunted nearly to extinction by trappers-affected today's population -many fur trading posts turned into today's cities
  • Period: Jan 1, 1500 to

    Early Contact with Europeans

    -exposed First Nations to technologies like pots and pans that helped them survive to this day
    - relationships were made that benefited both sides
    -Set in motion events that continued to create tension today
  • Period: Apr 12, 1550 to

    British Rule

    • the trading posts made for trade meant Aboriginals had to constantly move and trap animals
    • Depopulation of animals meant less food and raw resources for the actual Aboriginals
    • invasion of their land meant they had to deal with constant bullying and no real control over themsleves
  • Period: to

    The Seven Years' War

    -A lot of reserved land was populated by settlers and their culture stayed in the area
    - The British and French control most of the land that was originally Aboriginal
  • Hudson's Bay Company Monopoly + North West Company

    -initiated a fierce competition among the nations to provide the furs for the Europeans
    - incited a rivalry among the nations to acquire the Euro techno goods such as guns and knives
    - relationships(such as tribes and villages) were created between posts and tribes that were past on to later generations
  • Red River Colony

    • The Aboriginals opposed settlers because they were taking their land without asking, this caused tension and battles (future)
    • Foreign government like the British tried to and did control most of the Aboriginal movement and limited their activity.
  • European Disease

    Smallpox, Influenza, measles
    - loss of population set them back for the future
    - outnumbered by Europeans so their control of land diminished even more
    - First Nations became somewhat more immune to the diseases after

    The Numbered Treaties

    -Unintentionally lost their land and homes
    - "cash for land" bamboozeled them and the concept didn't trully effect them until later when they saw the government control them
    - Aboriginals had to live on reserves
  • Indian Act

    1927- made it illegal for Aboriginals to pursue land, which meant they could not have direct "ownership" of their land.
    - meant that most Aboriginals would be restricted and controlled by government officials.
    -status Indian meant they would recieve specific benefits from the government (even to this day)

    Residential schools

    -Forced Aboriginals to give up their cultures and beliefs that led to the idea of being assimilated
    - Children were being punished for not obeying( abuse, emotional scarring, physical scarring, even death)
    -Many children lost touch with their own history, language, heritage and culture
