    California declared to be a free state; as a compromise, fugitive slave law was passed to return escaped slaves to their owners.

    Dred Scott
    Scott was a slave that was taken to free state by his owner. He sued for his right because he lived in a free state. The Supreme Court determined that he was a property that was taken from his owner and he had no right. African American citizenship was denied.
