Election Day on November 7 was a very close race between George Bush and Al Gore. There were problems with counting votes in Florida. The Supreme Court ruled in favor of Bush on December 12 and he won even though Gore had more popular votes. -

On September 11, four U.S. airplanes were hijacked by terrorists from the al- Qaeda organization. Two of the planes hit the twin towers in New York City and almost 3,000 Americans lost their lives. It is one of the most tragic days in recent U.S. history. -
Snipers Target DC Suburbs
From October 2 to 24, there were two snipers targeting the DC suburbs. They killed 10 people and wounded others. The sniper’s names were John Allen Muhammad and John Lee Malvo. The police arrested them on October 24. -

After a 9.3 Richter scale earthquake in the Indian Ocean, there was a southeast Asian tsunami on December 26. More than 290,00 people died from the tsunami. The United States and other countries around the world came together to help victims. -

On May 2, the U.S. Seals and the CIA shot and killed Osama Bin Laden. He was found in the city of Abbottabad, Pakistan. The operation was code-named Operation Neptune Spear and it was ordered by President Obama. -
A New Record for Michal Phelps
Michael Phelps broke the record for the most Olympic medals when he won the 4x200-meter freestyle relay. It was his nineteenth medal. In total, Phelps has 22 medals: 18 gold, 2 silver and 2 bronze.
