Ether Annesthesia
This type of annesthesia was created 1846 by dentist William T.G. Morton. We do not use this in the U.S. anymore because of the high flammability risk. Some side effects after sing is nausea and vomiting, and it also causes liver damage. -
Novocaine/Procaine
Novocaine or procaine was synthesized in 1905 by chemist Alfred Einhorn. Novocaine is injected into the body, and is only effective for around 30-60 minutes. Used with epinephrine it can last for around 90 minutes. It is mostly used for dental procedures. -
Propofol Annesthesia
Propofol annesthesia is the most common type of annesthesia used today. John B. Glen from Imperial Chemistry Industries (ICI) invented it. This was first approved in 1986 in the UK. The side affects can include dizziness, itchiness, and others, but aren't severe if you are not allergic to it. -
Future annesthesia
In the future, people taking annestesia will not have to prepare for it. For example, you can still eat and drink before going under annestesia, you can continue taking your herbal supplements, and continue taking other medications. Also, the form of annesthesia will not be through a needle, but instead a tablet or a gummy for children.
