  • The Blizzard

    A blizzard began in Janurary 6, 1996. This blizzard started in Washington D.C. and worked it's way up to the Easter seaboard. It started at 9p.m. and just in twenty-four hours there was already twelve inches of snow with a wind of fifty miles per hour. The blizzard caused one hundred fifty deaths and damages with a cost of one million dollars.
  • STS-72

    The first Space Shuttle was launched on January 11, 1996. The mission was to retrieve the Japaneese Flyer Unit and to deploy and later retrieve the Office of Aernautics and Space Technology-Flyer. nThis flight lasted eight days and twenty-two hours, with a distance of 3.7 miles. The Endeavour landed in Florida. The Piolt's name is Brent W. Jett and the commanders name is Brian Duffy.
  • Communications Decency Act

    This was the first time that Congress ever tried to add censors to inappropriate scenes on television as well as on online. They blocked(censors) anything that seemed to be indecent. This act also protects the changing of an original text.
  • Earthquake and Tsunami

    On February 21 of 1996, there was an earthquake in Peru. The earthquake was at 7:51 a.m. and had a magnitude of 7.5. The earthquake didn't cause a lot of damage itself but it did generate a tsunami in th Chimbote region of Peru. The tsunami had a maximum excess of 5 meters. The tsunami affected 590 km of the costal of Peru. The tsunami killed twelve people in total. It also injusred 57 people, which one was severly injured. The total for damaged houses was thirty-seven with only 15

    On March first a new toll-free number because of the increased demand of 1(800) numbers. Too many company's and businesses were using the 800 toll-free number that a new one had to be created to increase the amount of available numbers. Another purpose for this new area code was so that consumers could keep reaching all kinds of business free of charge. To let everyone know about the new code Nynex had ot advertise through radio, campaigns, and direcrt mail. This new code was a big positive.
  • First Surface Photos of Pluto

    On March 7, 1996 the astronomers finally took pictures of Pluto's surface. The astronomers used the Hubble Space Telescope to take over a dozen pictures of pluto. When they looked at the images they saw that pluto had a surface similar to Earth's. According to the pictures Pluto has an icy surface. The astronomers took these pictures when Pluto was about three million miles from the Hubble observatory.
  • Chicago Bulls

    On April 20 of 1996 the Chicago Bulls broke the basketball record. They won seventy-two games in one season. The Original Big Three: Michael Jordan, Scottie Pippen, and Dennis Rodman had the major part in this season. During this season the Bulls only lost back-to-back games one time. They lost to Denver and Phoenix. This was at the begining of the season when they started out by winnin twenty-three out of twenty-five games.

    Mass Murderer: Martin Bryant
    Martin Bryant killed 35 people and left 19 others injured in Tasmania Austrailia. He was a man with a very low IQ. He worked as a handyman for a rich woman, which later died and left him her wealth. Martin was found suspicious for the death of his father and that of his employer. On the day of the massacre Bryant went to a cafe to eat, after he finished eating he pulled out his gun and killed several people. After that he went to the cafe's parking lot to continue killing other people.

    After he killed several more people in teh parking lot he stole a car and drove home. On his way home he continued shooting then he lit his car on fire so that he could steal another car. Which he did kill the people that were in the second stolen car.

    On this day the play "Ideal Husband" (a one hundred year old play) opened at the Barrymore Theater in New York City. It opened for three hundred eight performances. This play is about a politician whose reputation gets ruind after receiving a blackmail from a woman. The blackmail sent by the woman contains evidence of malfeasance.

    Severe thunderstorm and a tornado in Bangladesh
    On this day there was severe thunderstorms and tornados. The wind storms themselves killed between 500 and 1,000 people. They also left 30,000 injured and 100,000 homeless. In some families there was no one left. In most case a head-injury was the cause of death. In other cases people were burried alive under the collasping villages and houses.

One of them, Leroy Schweitzer gave classes on how to pass a fradulant check and fite bogus liens.     Nintendo 64 in Japan
    On this day the Nintendo 64 went on sale in Japan. The Nintendo 64 was the only game that used cartriges. The best selling games were Super Mario, Mario Kart 64, and Goldeneye 007:the Legend of Zelda. Two hundred twenty-five million of the Nintendo 64 softwares worldwide, 5.5 of those were sold in Japan.

    Hotmail begins
    Hotmail was created by Jack Smith and Sabeer Bhatia. It was the first free e-mail provider. Hotmail's mission was to allow anyone in anypart of the world to be able to send free electronic mail. It was created on a platform that used free BSD and Solaris operating systems. Millions of people started using hotmail immediatly. Later Microsft purchased it at four hundred million dollars and it was expanded. Hotmail's main competitors are Yahoo and Lycos.

    Earthquake in Mexico
    An earthquake with a magnitude of 6.5 shook the southern part of Mexico. It had a depth of 40.3 miles southwest of Iguala Guerrero. It only hit parts of nine states that are on the coast. The reported deaths were three. In which one died when the roof of their house in Guerreo collapsed over them. Another two died in a cab when rocks fell over the vehicle and squashed them. They were left without power.

    Windows 3.0
    On this day Window realeased it's free 3.0 version, which was designed for windows 95 and to be extended easier. In 1996 this was the newest version. This new version included several free programs, such as: Mail, new, media player, and more. Windows 3.0 also offered the choice of different languages. Just in the first six hours, more that 32,000 people had already downloaded windows 3.0. Within a week 1 million copies were downloaded.

    Nuclear-test-ban
    President Bill Clinton signed the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty at the United Nations. We were the first nation to sign the CTBT. This treaty stated that it was prohibited any nuclear weapon test explosions or other nuclear explosions. The treaty helped establish a global monitoring network. It also established the option of short-term notice on site inspections that improves capabilities to detect cheating. This was also to reduce the number of deaths and injuries.

    U.S. wins Federation Cup
    This was the day that the U.S. wins the Federation Cup over Spain in Tennis. The game was in Atlantic City in the Atlantic City Convention Center. The score for this game ended at 5-0. The players for the U.S. were Monica Seles and Lindsy Davenport. The Spain Players were Conchita Martinez and Aranxta Sanches Vicario. These player were four out of the top seven.

    Tragedy at a Stadium
    `A tragedy happened in Guatemala City on this day. This was the day of the Soccer World Cup(CONCAF) between Costa Rica and Guatemala. The game was at the Stadium in Guatemala (Estadio Mateo Flores). This stadium was big enough for 36,000 people but 45,796 tickets were sold. Just before the game started there was a stampede that asphyxiated 84 people and injured more than 180 people.

    Mike Rozier was the winner of the 1983 Heisman Trophy for football. He was from Camden, NJ. On the day of his death he went out to drink with his friends. The man that shot him was named Lou, he also drank with him that night. While they were drinking he pulled out his gun and shot him without having one reason. He was shot twice in the stomach and once in the hand. One of the guys that was with him, Merriel, also got shot. He was shot three time in the chest but he didn't die.

    South Korea's largest strike
    The strike began on Thursday but got worse on Saturday. By Saturday the strike already included 5,000 merchants that were protesting against the new labor law. The merchants threw rocks to 3,000 police police faces. As days passed the strike members kept increasing. In response to this the South Korean government declared striking illegal and twelve people were arrested.

    Jonbenet Ramsey
    A six year old girl named Jonbenet Ramsey died on this day. She had already won a beauty pagent and was named beauty queen. She was found in the murdered in the basement of her house with an anonymous note asking for money for the safe return of their daughter. The family never recieved a call from the "kidnapper". The weird thing about her death was that there were no footsteps in the house other than the family's. The police said that this case wasn't linked to murder.
