  • Engle v. Vitale

    Engle v. Vitale
    In result of the New York's Regents Prayer, the court decided that having a State prayer and having it be recited every day in Public Schools was unconstitutional. This is because, it imposes on others religion, which violates their First Amendment, which includes freedom of religion. This impacts multicultural education because religion is very much a part of everyone's culture and not having your beliefs imposed upon in the classroom is important.

    First bilingual and bicultural public school in the United States
    During and after the Cuban Revolution, many Cuban refugee families ended up in South Florida. In an effort to service these kids, Coral Way created an educational program using both English and Spanish. This is critical in shaping today's Multicultural Education because this was in no way a language program, but a way to integrate the student's culture and first language into the education program.
  • Immigration Act of 1965

    Immigration Act of 1965
    The National Origins Formula restricted immigration based on the proportions that existed. It is said that this was to in a way control ethnic distribution. The signing of the Immigration Act od 1965 abolished this formula. Allowing Asians and Latino Americans to immigrate to the United States,. This impacts multicultural education becasue, it led to more diversety in classrooms.

    Equality of Educational Opportunity Study
    This study assessed the availability of equal educational opportunities for students of different, race, color, religion and national origin. This impacts multicultural education because, it led to schools working to end desegregation, as it was proven that African American students benefited from instegrated educational settings.

    Thed indian education Act was a wya to cater to the specific needs of Indian students. We all have specific educational needs that are specific to our culture. This impacts multicultural education because this Act was a start to acknowldging differnet cultural nneds and meeting the needs of Indian and Alaska Native students.
  • Children Defense Fund Founded

    Children Defense Fund Founded
    The Children Defense Fund is a non-profit child advocacy organization that helps children get support from community members that will aid them into adulthood. This organization was founded by Marian Wright Edelman. As a woman of color, who attended the program and volunteered at the Marian Wright Edelman Library, I'm a strong advocate for CDF as their research brings educational, and societal issues to the surface to be challenged and improve multicultural education.
  • Lau v. Nichols

    Lau v. Nichols
    San Francisco schools did not provide English Language instruction to Chinese students who needed. Which means their tests were not an exam of knowledge but of language. The court decided the schools' failure to provide the needed instruction was a violation of their civil rights, which bans discrimination due to race, color, or national origin. This impacted Multicultural education because, in an effort to create equal opportunity, resulting in programs for English Language Learners.
  • Refugee Act of 1980

    Refugee Act of 1980
    This act allowed admission for refugees for humanitarian reasons and resulted in over three million refugees into the United States. This impacts multicultural education because,it led to many refugee children in the classrooms. Refugee children in the classroom increased the need for special services. This led to the signing of the Refugee Education Assitance Act just in time for the arrival of thousands of Cuban and Haitian refugees.
  • Transgender Bathroom "Law"

    Transgender Bathroom "Law"
    This is actually not a law. However, failure to comply could result in a lawsuit or financial punishment. Whereas the school could lose federal aid if they don't comply. The Federal government "ask" schools to allow transgender students to use the bathroom that matches their gender idenity. This impacts multiculral education because a student's identity and ability to express who they are at school is important and shape their learning environment.

    The President Rescinds Trangender Bathroom Directive
    The transgender bathroom directive has been rescinded. It will be decided at a later date in court if it is permanent. The president wishes to further consider the legal burdens of the directive. This impacts multicultural education because, now those transgender students no longer have the right to use the restroom that matches their identity, and the reversion of the school's rules are impactful for the individual and their peers.
