  • The Merger

    The Merger
    In 2006, Abu Musab Al-Zarqawi, an Islamist militant who headed Al-Qaeda in Iraq, was killed in a targeted bombing. After his death, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, an Islamist preacher who headed Jaish Ahl al-Sunnah, brought his organization under the Majlis Shura Council (MSC) (Atwan 2015, 116). MSC merged with Al-Qaeda and would eventually become the Islamic State of Iraq(ISI)(Atwan 2015, 116).
  • The New Emir

    Abu Omar al-Baghdadi served as the leader of ISI until he was killed in a US air strike in 2010 (Atwan 2015, 117). Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi was then chosen to be the next emir by the Shura Council (Atwan 2015, 117).
  • Acquiring Syria

    In 2013, Baghdadi and his organization used full-on raids and other various military tactics to seize several territories throughout Syria, thus creating the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham (ISIS)(Atwan 2015, 118).
  • The Caliphate

    The Caliphate
    On July,1st, 2014, Baghdadi released an audio recording outlining his vision for Islamic State, while urging Muslims from around the world to join his organization (Atwan 2015, 9). In this recording, Baghdadi also declared a new caliphate and announced that he would be its caliph i.e., a successor to the Prophet Mohammed (Atwan 2015, 9).
  • ISIS Attacks

    ISIS Attacks
    Throughout the next few years, ISIS carries out a series of attacks, including suicide bombings, shootings and beheadings of aid workers, journalists, and pilots of different nationalities throughout the MENA region. On May 3rd, 2015, two “ISIS inspired” gun men are killed in a failed attack in Garland, Texas, marking the 1st ISIS-associated attack on U.S. soil (TIME 2015). TIME. 2015. “The Rise of ISIS”. TIME.
