    Thomas Jefferson, a prominent figure in American history, becomes the third president of the United States.

    The Lousiana Purchase
    France and the United States agree to purchase approximately 828,000 square miles of territory from the French for 11 million. This increased the United States territory, and in December of the same year, the transfer was complete.

    The War of 1812 was a war that brought the United States into international issues. The British hostile behavior and act of impressment American ships and citizens led to engaging war with Britain for a second time. The end was marked with the Treaty of Ghent which resulted in Britain leaving Canada.

    The Missouri Compromise was a telling event that would admit Missouri a slave state and Maine a free state; however, it would also set the boundaries of future slave and free states in America. This can be looked as one of the foundations that ultimately ended in Civil War.

    Following South Carolina's example, multiple state delegates including South Carolina, Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, and Louisiana convened to form the Confederate States of America. Jefferson Davis would be their president.

    The Civil War

    Following the battle at Fort Sumter, a war erupted between the Union and Confederacy. The Civil war lasted four years and was the deadliest American war in our history. The resulting casualties are close to over 600,000. The Union ended up winning the war with General Lee's surrender, and the reconstruction efforts began for the South with the 10% Plan.

    The Emancipation Proclamation freed the slaves from the states that have seceded from the union; however, it did not necessarily free any slaves, it marked a change of character for the war and galvanized unity and liberty for the Union.
