  • Mercantilism

    Mercantilism
    Mercantilism is the practice of creating and maintaining wealth by carefully controlling trade. England was the country controlling the trade for the colonists.
  • French and Indian War

    French and Indian War
    The war created the Proclamation Line of 1763, which banned all colonists from settling west of the Appalachian Mountains and was the first act of rebelling. An important result of this war is that it led to having huge war debt.
  • Sugar Act

    Sugar Act
    The stamp act set taxes on molasses and sugar. This was the first time laws were set specifically to raise money in the colonies to regulate trade.
  • Stamp Act

    Stamp Act
    This act required colonists to purchase a stamp for newspapers, pamphlets, legal documents, and other items. This was parliaments first effort to raise money by taxing directly.
  • Declaratory Act

    Declaratory Act
    This act stated that the parliament had the power to make laws for the colonies "in all cases whatsoever". This caused the parliament to create and establish rules, not the colonists.
  • Townshend Act

    Townshend Act
    The Townshend act placed duties on imported glass, lead, paint, paper, and tea. This made it easier for tax collectors to get writs of assistance. The money from the duties paid for military costs and the salaries of colonial governors.
  • Boston Massacre

    Boston Massacre
    The Boston Massacre was an incident in which British soldiers fired into a crowd of angry colonists. The soldiers killed five people and this caused conflicts between the colonists and the British.
  • Tea Act

    Tea Act
    This act kept duties on imported tea and allowed the British East India company to export directly to the colonies. Since the tea was in demand, they made a lot of money off of it since it was taxed.
  • Boston Tea Party

    Boston Tea Party
    The Boston Tea Party was a protest against the Tea Act in which a group of angry colonists boarded British tea ships and dumped 340 chests of tea into the Boston Harbor. This later lowered the prices of tea.
  • Quartering Act

    Quartering Act
    This act forced colonists to house (or quarter) and supply for the British soldiers. This act went against the rights of citizens which caused them to get upset.
