Though the problem was that Berlin was in East Germany which was Communist controlled and they wouldn't allow Western German trade to help the Democratic side of Berlin. Because Russia didn't show up they send troops to help South Korea and push them back to Cuba almost starting WW3. This is a time of HUGE conflict and debates over whether or not we should nuke Cuba. Eventually we don't but it's one of the main reasons communist nations were scared of Capitalist nuclear arms. -
Brinkmanship
It was a military tactic of opposing creating many weapons and going to the brink of war to cause the other side to retreat. It didn't actually work and actually made tensions REALLY high. -

The first satellite sent into space, and was sent by the Russians. It scared the U.S with the idea that they could literally send missiles from across the globe into the U.S. So it started a competition to see who could get to space and eventually a race to the moon. It kinda drifted the tension away from war, and to a competition so it in a way lowered war tension. -

The attempt to overthrow Decal Castro's communist dictatorship in Cuba. The U.S funded the rebels, but in the end the rebels failed to overthrow him and ended up executed. This lead to very shaky relations with Cuba, and they turned to Russia for help causing paranoia in America. This is what lead to the Cuban Missile Crisis and the closest we ever got to war. -
Berlin Wall
Was created in one night to separate communist East Germany from the Capitalist West Germany. It cut Berlin basally in half.
