  • Royal Proclamation

    Royal Proclamation
    The Royal Proclamation was issued by King George III in 1763. It formally ended the Seven Years' War and transferred French territory in North America to Great Britain. It was a document that set out the core elements of the relationship between First Nations and the Crown and was the KIng's way of building and maintaining additional loyalties from Aboriginal peoples. It helped in establishing a new administrative structure for the recently acquired territories in Canada. Izzy

    The Red River Resistance was an uprising caused by the transfer of Rupert's Land. That was where they lived and they were scared of being in control by Canadians. Blake
  • The Indian Act

    The Indian Act
    The Indian Act happened in the year 1876. It banned Indigenous peoples, along with their communities to express their identities through governance and culture. It was endeavour to generalize the varied population of the Indigenous peoples, and make them a part of the non-indigenous population. This was done so they would become like everyone else. The motive was for all Indigenous 'defects' would be eliminated. Some examples would be culture, social, economic, and political behaviour. Brook

    Treaty 6
    Treaty 6 was the sixth treaty signed by the First Nations and The Crown in Fort Carlton on August 23rd, 1876. It included various things that the first five treaties did not. Treaty 6 gave them education on their reserve, and more agricultural implements. It aimed to protect their rights as well, and some of them did so by lawsuits or land claims. Blake
  • Northwest Resistance

    Northwest Resistance
    The Northwest resistance was an uprising of the Metis, lead by Louis Riel. It lasted for five months and was against the Canadian Government. It was fought mostly by the Metis and First Nations, but they were all eventually defeated by the government troops. All of this led to the permanent enforcement of Canadian law over in the west, and the hanging of Louis Riel. Blake
  • The Manitoba Schools Act

    The Manitoba Schools Act
    This act eliminated all provincial funding provided by the government for all Catholic and Protestant schools. Instead established a number of tax-supported public schools. This was created because many immigrants from Ontario protested against public funding for Catholic schools. The government eventually gave in and put this act into place. This created a single, non-denominational school system in the language english only. Brook

    Treaty 8
    Treaty 8 was the eighth treaty signed between the First Nations and The Queen of England. The agreement had a land mass of around 840 000 kilometres squared. The most important parts of Treaty 8 were the ensures of peace and friendship, making a partnership. Treaty 8 also gave monthly shipments of hunting supplies, and the right to hunt to the First Nations. Blake

    Suffrage movement

    The suffrages was a time where women fought for, through peaceful protests, the right to vote. It began in London, then the concept made its way over across the Atlantic Ocean to North America. It took onlt about fourteen years in Canada until action was taken to appease the mass, but in other places, such the the United States, it took almost one hundred years of struggle for any action to be taken.     The Internment of Ukrainian Canadians

    This event took place very shortly after WW1. It was one of Canada's first internment operations. Over 8,500 Ukrainian men, women and children were taken into camps as prisoners for military reasons under the War Measurement act. This lasted for about six years. Ukraine people or of Ukraine decent were targeted because at the time split between both an ally and an enemy, which made them dangerous to Canada, and the enemy (Austro-Hungary), had declared war against the British.     The Metis Betterment Act
    The Metis betterment act took place in 1938. It was an act of the Alberta Legislature created a committee with members of the Metis and of the government so they could plot out lands to distribute among the Metis. Twelve different area were mapped out so they could create an ongoing cooperation with the crown. This allowed Metis people to have land to settle on.     The Official Languages Act
    The Official Languages Act was what made English and French the two main languages in Canada. Having these two languages as Canada's official languages requires for all federal services to be available in both French and English. It allowed all Canadians to choose what they wanted to speak and get federal services in both languages. It established official bilingualism throughout the county and recognized both English and French as equal. Brook

    Bill 101
    Bill 101, also known as the Charter of The French Language, was a law passed in Quebec making French their official language for everything like education, work, business and the courts. Bill 101 was passed in 1977. This was better because the majority of people in Quebec spoke French. Blake
  • The Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms

    The Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms
    The Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms guarantees the rights and freedoms set out in it, only revoked if a person defiles the reasonable limits prescribed by law. The Charter itself was created by a committee of Canadian Parliamentarians in 1982, after two years of debating. The Charter protects Canadians from the power of the state. It changed the legal landscape in Canada since it was entrenched in our modern constitution that April. Izzy
  • Emergencies Act

    Emergencies Act
    The Emergencies Act is a law passed by the Parliament of Canada in 1988 that overtook the War Measures Act that was passed orgininally in 1914. It allows the federal government to take drastic measures in event of a national emergency. The Act contains very specific descriptions as to what 'emergencies' apply to it. There are four:
    • A public welfare emergency
    • A public order emergency
    • An international emergency
    • A war emergency

  • (Aboriginal) Day of Action

    (Aboriginal) Day of Action
    The Aboriginal Day of Action was a day of protest to force federal change organized by the Assembly of First Nations on June 29, 2007. Events were held all across the country at various sites at set aside times. The protests were organized to call attention to poverty, lack of action on land claim issues, the quality of the health and social service programs, and the government's cancelation of the Kelowna Accord, which was an agreement between the government of Canada and the Aboriginal.
