Brown V. Board of Education
This was a landmark supreme court case where the Court invalidated the Plessy v Furgusson ruling, declaring 'separate but equal' to be untrue. Future Supreme Court justice Thurgood Marshall was one of the NAACP lawyers who successfully argued the case. This case finally gave kids of all races equal opportunity in education. Vietnam War Begins
The Vietnam war was an undeclared war between America and the soviet union because the US believed communism was threatening to expand all over south-east Asia. Neither the Soviet Union nor the United States could risk an all-out war against each other because of their nuclear arsenal. Over the 20 year time period over 250,000 US soldiers died.

Space Race
The space race was a 'race' between the Soviet Union and the United States, for dominance in the space frontier. The first man to step foot on the moon was Neil Armstrong. The space race prompted an increase in interest in NASA and pursuance of higher education in the sciences. Also it increased patriotism in the US.

Cuban Missile Crisis
A 13 day upfront confrontation between the United States and the Soviet Union during the Cold War caused by the American discovery of Soviet ballistic missile deployment in Cuba. Assassination of JFK
President John F. Kennedy was assassinated at 12:30 p.m. while riding in a motorcade in Dallas during a campaign visit. Kennedy died 1 hour later at 46 years old. Roe V. Wade
This was a landmark supreme court case of the time period. It legalized abortion and is currently in the middle of the controversy “pro-life” and “pro-choice” advocates. The Court ruled that a woman has the right to an abortion without interference from the government in the first trimester of pregnancy, as it is her "Right to privacy."

Iran hostage crisis
The Iran hostage crisis was a diplomatic standoff between the United States and Iran during president Jimmy Carter's administration. Iranian College students that supported the Iranian Revolution overthrew the US embassy and held 52 American diplomats hostage for over a year. It is to this day the lengthiest hostage crisis in history.

Nelson Mandela released
Nelson Mandela released after 27 years imprisonment in South Africa. Nelson Mandela was a South African anti-apartheid revolutionary, political leader, and philanthropist who served as President of South Africa from 1994 to 1999. He was the country's first black head of state and the first elected in a fully representative democratic election.
