Timeline: 1850 - 1861

  • Uncle tom's cabin

    This book helped incite the civil war because they realized. The north that they were right and need to get rid of slavery in the south. In the south, come to the conclusion that they need to keep with there slavery that they had and do away with it. The books help prove and infacise that slavery was not a good thing and they proved it to the northers. The way they did was by the book because the author did not believe in slavery also.
  • Republican Party

    This party was created because of the Kansas-Nebraska Act and the increase of expansion in the US into places that have already not have slavery. this party disagreed with the expansion of slavery because that was not the right thing to do. all in all this lead to the fight that messed up and destroyed the confederates states. this brought the slavery problem up and out so that they knew what they are doing.
  • Kanas-Nebraska Act

    This was that act that allowed people in Nebraska and Kansas to have the ability to choose if they wanted to have slavery in their states. This lead to the repeal of the Missouri compromise of 1820. this had a large effect on the civil war because the white people got to decide whether their state was going to be a slave state or free with no one's opinion or help which made the slaves mad. they had no way to represent themselves so it was hard for them.
  • Election of 1856

    During this presidential election, Democrat James Buchanan won against Republican John C. Fremont with Buchanan's 174 electoral votes to Fremont's 114 electoral votes. During this election, the Republican Party held its first national convention in Philadelphia denying Congress and territorial legislatures the power to give legal existence to slavery in the territories. It was also during this election that voting was divided along rigid sectional lines.
  • Bloody Kansas

    During the time of Bloody Kansas, all it mainly consisted of was violence between the North and the South and it was because it was during this time that slavery was to be decided on which state it would allow being in as according to the Nebraska-Kansas Act.
  • Brooks-Sumner Incident

    Northern Senator Sumner was the martyr for the idea of freedom in the North while Southern Congressman Brooks was the hero in the South. At this time, Brooks had brutally beaten Sumner at the halls of Congress due to the rising tensions of the idea of expanding slavery.
  • Dred Scott

    During the Dred Scott vs. Sanford case, the decision was that a slave was not a citizen but was considered property and did not have the power to sue in federal court. With this decision, the southern states became happy while the northern states grew furious with the court's decision.
  • LeCompton Constitution

    This constitution had been written by the people who were against the Anti-Slavery Topeka Constitution where it consisted of the people who had wanted slavery in Kansas to exist. Then in 1861 Kansas became a free state which made the people who were for slavery mad because this is just only showed that the pro-slavery people were losing their power in Congress.
  • House Divided Speech:

    The House Divided Speech talked about how until the issue was reached then it would not be able to come to a solution. Also, in this speech, Lincoln also talked about how the United States and the federal government would not be able to withstand having a country that is both half free states and slave states.
  • Lincoln Douglas Debates

    During the debate, Lincoln and Douglas were trying to win the presidency and Douglas decided that we should make slavery nationwide. He thinks is the best way to go and it will help the people. Douglas was proud and stood to buy that but lincoln did not and he tried to resolve the controversial moral question by using politics. But this could have been the reason for starting the civil war. Douglas stated in his presidency that people could keep slavery or have it if they wanted it.
  • Harper's Ferry

    Haper's Fery is a place and this place is known as West Virginia now. This was where the federal arsenal at Harper's Ferry. This is where the John brown raid is known for in 1859. He try to use the weapons and the town as the base off the operations this is where they were going to hold the slave revolt. The defeat that Brown had did come to the surface and people heard about it making them upset that they did not even win. So later on this did have an affect n why they started the civil war.
  • John Brown

    John Brown decided to have a slave rebolt held in Harper's Ferry and to fight off the people that were after them. They Had failed and ended up losing but it did not just end like that. That defeat helped fuel one of the reasons why we were going to war. This caused the stakes to get in the election of 1860. This did help with the start of the war. He was an abolitionist he did not see slavery as a good thing so he was against it.
  • Election of 1860

    During the Election of 1860, Lincoln became the 16th President of the United States, and his win eventually led to the Civil War because the South believed that Lincoln was going to abolish slavery.
  • Secession

    During this time there were 11 southern states that seceded from the Union after the Election of 1860. This was because those states thought that they were going to lose their rights to slavery after Lincoln became President.
  • Lincoln's 1st Inaugural Address

    During Lincoln's Address, he established that he was not going to take away slavery in the pro-slavery states but instead he would try to find a way to make them happy by securing slavery somehow. He also stated the slavery was not going to be able to expand anymore and must only remain in the locations it was at the time of his address.
