    They were seen as bastions of "popism" (support to the Pope)

    Mary I (Tudor) Reign

    She died in 1558, her death was greeted as she had turned the nation against her

    Public Stakes

    Protestantism was forbidden and "heretics" were burned
    Over 200 protestants went to stake
    This gave the surname "Bloody Mary" to the Queen

    The act of supremacy abolished the Pope's authority, restored te Queen's authority over the church and Elizabeth I became the "Suprem Gouvernor of the Church of England"
