Ended the Mexican-American War. Mexico agreed to the Rio Grande border for Texas and ceded New Mexico and California to the U.S. U.S. agreed to pay $15 million for the Mexican cession. -

Control the spread of slavery in territories in order to keep the balance of free and slave states everywhere. -
Dred Scott Decision
Dred Scott (Missouri slave) His master died and he claimed himself no longer a slave. The chief and justices sent Dred Scott back into slavery. “Slaves were property, not people” Citizens disagreed with the decision. Court plummeted in public prestige. -

Battle between Union and Confederates during the American Civil War. A turning point in the war. Many were killed. -
