Consumer Revolution
British goods were on the rise in America. Many of the "genteel" or the upper class of America would by British made clothing, tea, tea sets, magazines, novels, etc. Even George Washington would buy British clothing even though it was ill fitting because it showed his gentility. Americans were still holding on to their British identity. They read books of British philosophers when they had some of the greatest philosophers right in there backyard such as Benjamin Franklin. -
Stono Rebellion
South Carolina in the 1739 has one of the largest slave populations in America because of the rice farms. A slave named Jemmy on September 9, 1739 got a group of slaves together to rebel against the white colonist in an attempted escape for freedom. About 20 slaves broke into a local store, killed two people in side and stole weapons. They successfully burned 7 plantations and killed 20 whites. They were caught the next day and their head here placed on stakes along the road to Charleston. -
The First Great Awakening
A time where some protestants were tired of the strict rules and decided to make their faith their own. They believed that anyone , even women, children and slaves, could accept Jesus Christ as their savior. The major states of the revival were New Jersey, Virginia, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts and New England. The prominent and most well known evangelist was George Whitefield. The First Great Awakening caused a rise in many different denominations such as Baptist, Methodist, and Presbyterian. -
The Battles of Lexington and Concord
British troops were ordered to secretly confiscate the powder magazine located in Concord, Massachusetts on April 19,1775. Although, minutemen were warned and ready for battle in Lexington, Massachusetts.The minutemen fought the British into retreat. It's unclear who fired the first shot but this was the start of the American Revolution.The rebel win of the American Revolution caused the official split from British rule and eventually the Declaration of Independence (1). -
Declaration of Independence
After the rebel win of the American Revolution. All 13 colonies gathered together in Philadelphia all in agreement that it was imperative to officially split ties with the British and become independent. The Declaration of Independence was written primarily by Thomas Jefferson of Virginia and John Adams of Massachusetts (2). They made sure that nothing could be done with out the consent of those being governed. This is the foundation of the American government. -
The Bill of Rights
The Bill of Rights was an outline of 10 amendments that outlined the rights of individual citizens. It was written mostly by James Madison. The new federal government that was forming in America was frightening many citizens, this calmed their fears. The idea was pitched in a 1787 Philadelphia convention and was finally ratified by the last state, Virginia, in 1791. These rights limited the governments power and gave each citizen an identity in the country (3). -
The War of 1812
Also called the second war for American Independence. Britain was seizing American soldiers, forcing them to fight on British war ships and siding with the Indians in Canada halting American expansion. President James Madison wanted neutrality; Congress majority voted for war. Andrew Jackson emerged as a great leader after leading his troops to conquering the Battle of New Orleans. Americans did not win or lose any land in this war. Although, citizens gained national pride and patriotism.
