Baby boom
Thousands of soldiers were returning from WW2. These soldiers had a lot of time to get married and start families with lots of kids, this new period was known as the baby boom as families were paid to have kids and this brought the employment rate really high and and the economy started to preform well. This change was cultural and was internal. -
Canada continues to grow
Canada's population continued to grow along with the economy, the government decides they'll build hospitals, schools, libraries, roads ect. The government also builds the trans Canada highway, the longest road on earth. Alberta then comes in and starts producing a ton of oil, about 2/3 of Canada's oil production and that attracts foreign investors into the country. the St. Lawerence Sea way
The St. Lawrence Seaway project began so that ships could have access to the great lakes from the Atlantic ocean. This project allowed many Canadians to find jobs to build dams, locks, bridges and more. this was economic and was external and internal as it was for other countries but it benefited Canada a lot. -
Suburban living style
Canada began to build new housing known as the suburbs. Families would begin to move into these new houses which would be good because these towns were located right outside of major cities. These houses also meant that many people would need cars to get to school and work. This was an internal social change. -
Royal Commission on Economic Prospects.
Canadians argue that there are two many Americans gaining power in Canada so they believe a way to stop it is to create a huge pipeline running from coast to coast. This project would be very expensive however and although there was resistance coming the government pushed through and had the pipeline built. this was an economic and internal change -
Canada and American culture
Canadians were consumed by American culture, they would listen to their music and watch there TV. this would becoming a problem for those worried about the Canadian identity. As a result of this Canada launches a Canadian counsel for the arts. The costed Canada about 1.4 million dollars and provide Canada with orchestras, theaters, dance companies and Canadian artists. this change would be an internal cultural change. -
Cancon rules
Cancon rules says that broadcasters must show 45% of Canadian content on their channels. This would be an internal cultural change. -
Baby boom increases
The baby increased Canada population to 17.5 and that was about a 30% increase from 1949. This change would be an internal change and could be economic as this would mean more workers but could also mean social as it could just be more people. -
Bill of rights
This bill would protect the rights to equality, freedom of religion, freedom of speech, freedom to the press and of assembly of association. It would also guarantee legal rights to counsel and fair hearings. First nations were also given the time to vote this year. I think that this would be an internal cultural change. -
Tommy Douglas
Tommy Douglas became the leader of the new democratic party. He had been the premier of Saskatchewan previously and had helped get universal health care there. in 1966 all Canadians would receive free health care. This would be considered to be an internal political change. -
Canada's new design
Prime minister Pearson tells the house of commons he would like to adopt a new national flag. He wanted a symbol that would create a Canadian identity. Over 5000 flag designs were sent over to the government for consideration. On December 15, the house of commons decided on the single maple leaf as the new flag. This was an internal cultural change as it gave Canada more of an identity. -
Cars
Canada signs the Autopact (Canada-US Automotive Products Agreement) to create a single north american market for passenger cars, trucks, buses, tires and automotive parts. The big automakers agreed to keep the same production levels in Canada as it was before the pact was signed. The AutoPact created thousands of jobs and helped seal a relationship with the U.S -
Color TV
Only July 14 the government announced that they would be getting colored TV on September 1st. Canada would be the third country with colored TV. This had been an internal cultural change. -
Canada's 100th birthday
Canada turned 100 years old and they invited 50 Million people together from around the world and 62 nations. They had a huge expo to show their modernism and innovation. This was an external and internal time and it was social as so many people gathered in Canada. -
CRTC
The Broadcasting act established would allow the CTRC (Canadian Radio-television Commission) to supervise all aspects of the Canadian broadcasting system. This was another step towards promoting the Canadian culture. This was an internal cultural change.
