Founding of Quebec
In the Sping on 1608, two ships set sail to France under the comand of Dupont-Grave. On June 3, Champlain arrived in Tadoussac. He relized that the commander was trading with other captians. Meanwhile, Champlain tried to have an advantage in the fur trade, he relized must travel further inland and set up a post there. This is where Champlain decided to create a new settlement, and he named it Kebec (Quebec) -
French Revolution ends
The French Revolution , the great massacre, politics and violence, started in 1789. It ended in the late 1790s with ascent of Napoleon Bonaparte. During this time French citizens razed and redesigned their country's political landscape, uprooting centuries old institutions. Like the American Revolution before it, the French Revolution was influenced by Enlightenment ideas. Although it failed to acheive its goals, the movement played a critical role in shaping modern nations. -
Fall of King Louis
Following the death of his grandfather Luis XV, he ruled king of france. He was not interested in governing and his wife. At age 21, he put the country in great debt. Louis was forced to leave escorted by a crowd of women and men into the heart of Paris. Found gility of treason by the National Convention, he was executed on January 21, 1793. -
Emperor Napoleon III
Born in Paris France, Charles-Louis-Napoleon Bonaparte was the third son of Napoleon I's brother, Louis Bonaparte, and his wife, Hortense de Beauharnais Bonapart. He lived in the United Kingdom until the Revolution began. He was free to return to France, which he did immediatly, but then was sent back to England by the provisional government. During the battle of Sedan, in July 1870, Napolean was captured by the Germans. He was deposed 2 days later, and the 3rd Republic of France was declared. -
Eiffel Tower
In 1889, Paris hosted an Exposition Universelle to mark the 100 year aniverisy of the French Revolution. More than 100 artists competed for a monument to be built on the Champ-de-Mars, located in Central Paris. The commission was granted to Eiffel et Compagnie, constructionowned by the bridge builder, architect and metals expert Alexandre-Gustave Eiffel. Maurice Koechlin one of his employees actually came up with the design and concept of the tower. -
The Dreyfus Affair - anti-semitic French army
The Deryfus case underscored and intensified bitter divisions within french politics and society. Alfred Deryfus a captain from the french army, came from a jewish family that had left its native Alsace for Paris when Germany annexed the province in 1871. In 1894, papers discovered in a wastebasket in the office of a German military made it appear that a French military officer was providing secret information to the German government. In September 1899, the president of France pardoned Deryfus. -
World War I
One afternoon, two days after declaring war on Russia, Germany declares war on France. Hours later, France makes its own declaration of war against Germany, readying its troops to move into the provinces of Alsace and Lorraine. Both sides were not ready for the fight. -
Peace Treaty of Versailles
The treaty was presented to German leaders to sign on May 7, 1919, forced them to concede territories Belgium, Czechoslovakia, and Poland.The Germans returned Alsace and Lorraine, annexed in 1871 after the Franco-Prussian War, to France. The treaty demanded demilitarization and occupation of the Rhineland, and special status for the Saarlsnd under French control. -
The Great Depression
France suffered severe destruction during World War I, Since it was not a country as heavily dependent on trade, France was not immediately affected by the Depression like many other European nations. It was not until around 1932-1933 that France was crushed by the Depression. For much of the 1930s France was faced with a political unrest, which was indicated by the 6 February 1934. -
