Compromise of 1850
The compromise of 1850 settled the dispute between the states whether they should all be free or slave states. Before the compromise, New mexico had become a state independent from mexico. California had wanted to become a free state. Texas had land all the way up to the rio grande river as well. After the compromise, California had officialy become a free state. New mexico had become new mexico territory, and is neither a free or slave territory. -
kansas-nebraska act
the kansas-nebraska act allowed for people who lived in kansas or nebraska whether or not they wanted their states to be free or slave. -

The dred scott decision is made, and allowed for slaves to go to western states and territories. -

Lincoln elected president
Shortly after his election, the civil war would start with an outbreak. -
Lincoln creates ten percent plan
This idea was created when the south broke from the union. In order to repair this, lincoln would have to get 10 % of people from the south to come back into the union. -
John Wilkes Booth assassinates lincoln
While attending a show at ford's theater, lincoln is shot in the head by john wilkes booth. He dies a few days later. -
13th amendment is passed
In January of 1865, the 13th amendment is passed and abolishes slavery. This amendment also gives power and authority to congress to make sure this amendment stays in effect. -
Signing of the Alaska Treaty
Alaska is bought from russia in 1867 for only 7.2 million USD. This allowed the U.S to be able to access the northern rim. -
Decoration Day
Most people now know this holiday as memorial day, and this holiday was set up by General John A. Logan. On the first Decoration Day (May 5,1868), General Logan gave a speech at Arlington National Cemetery where over 5000 people came to decorate the graves of the soldiers who lost their lives during the civil war. Graves were usually decorated with flowers. -
Andrew Johnson is impeached
After violating the Tenure of Office act (President could not remove anyone from office without the consent of the senate) president Andrew Johnson was voted out of office. Before he was impeached, president johnson would attempt to continue to reconstruct the confederate states, but the radical republicans were not to fond of his plan and continued to do things their own way. This conflict would eventually lead to his impeachment. -
Ulysses S Grant's presidency starts
Ulysses S Grant, in times of battles and the civil war, was considered pretty good as far as his accomplishments. He took down General Lee's army, causing the end of the civil war. During his presidency, however, not much was done while he was in office. He might have done a thing or two with national parks and what not, and his speech definitely caught some awkward attention. He also had some slight corruption in his administration, and caused new york's gold exchange to crash. (Black Friday) -
Robert E Lee dies
After going home a loser in the war, he became president of Washington College, a school in virginia. He was still respected by many people from the north and south both, and his school grew significant in size after returning from the war. However, Lee suffered from a stroke in which he died 2 weeks later. The school then went on to change its name to Washington and Lee College afterwards. -
Horace greeley loses to Ulysses s Grant in 2nd term
Horace Greeley, best known for creating the New York Tribune, runs for president. During this time, he becomes very sick and is mocked heavily. He is also a contributor to the creation of whats now known as the Liberal Republican Party. Greeley was admitted to a mental institution after his loss to Ulysses, where he died shortly after. -
Civil Rights Act of 1875 is made
This act prohibited racial discrimination in private orginizations like schools. Other public places included trains, and hotels. This act took 8 years before being declared unconstitutional to the 14th amendment.
