Charles Darwin

  • Contribution to Science

Charles Darwin was an English naturalist who wrote a book on natural selection. Darwin put off publishing because he knew the theory would arouse great controversy. The time he lived in didn't allow for any theory that might contradict Christian beliefs of the creation theory. Therefore, he continued to compile evidence. Darwin then published his theory of natural selection in On the Origin of Species. This book revolutionized the idea of biology and the transformation of species.
  • Beagle Voyage

Darwin undertook a mission ship's naturalist aboard the H.M.S.Beagle, a five year cruise around the world. During this voyage, Darwin noticed how species like certain birds changed along the coast of South America, especially on the Galápagos Islands. This helped reinforce his theory of transformation of species through natural selection.

  • Philosophy
