Thomas Kuhn 1922-1996

  • Paradigm Shifts

In 1962, Thomas Kuhn published a book called the Structure of Scientific Revolutions. Within this book, Khun discusses his theory of Paradigm Shifts: what he refers to as a new theory being proposed because the old way thinking can no longer explain the current situation. https://plato.stanford.edu/entries/thomas-kuhn/
  • Controversy

Of course, Thomas Kuhn was met with critics with some of theories. Most controversial was the fact that Kuhn stated that Scientists have no real way of comparing concepts on either side of a scientific revolution. Kuhn pondered how one can compare concepts that draw from different meanings and ideas. Citing Newton and Einstein's approaches. https://www.nature.com/articles/484164a#:~:text=Most%20controversial%20was%20Kuhn's%20claim,side%20of%20a%20scientific%20revolution.
  • Components of a paradigm shift

Thomas khun stated that there were three main Components of a paradigm shift:
    1. Paradigm, you have a have a paradigm, or a universally recognized principle.
    2. Normal Science: Scientist are committed to solving problems and puzzles as they arise using the known paradigms in existence, until a crises is brought about.
    3. Revolutionary Breakdown: The abandonment of the old way of thinking because it is no longer suitable for the new era of puzzles.
  • On Going Process

As Thomas khun explained with his theory, Paradigm Shifts are an ongoing process and will continue to happen as there are advancements to science and technology. As long as the ways of thinking continue to evolve, eventually there will be new paradigms.
