established a fishing colony in New Hampshire. It was named after the English county of Hampshire where Captain John Mason was raised. -
New York Colonized
The New York Colony was founded in 1626 by Peter Minuit and other colonists on Manhattan Island. The colony was taken over by the English in 1664. New York was named after the Duke of York and Albany, the brother of King Charles II of England. -
Maryland Colonized
In 1633 the first group of settlers set sail for Maryland to establish a colony for religious freedom. The first group of colonists had of 17 men and their wives, and about two hundred others, mostly servants who could work off their passage. The colony was named in honor of Queen Henrietta Maria, the wife of King Charles I. -
Connecticut Colonized
The Dutch were the first Europeans in Connecticut. A small fort was erected at the site of Hartford in 1633, then called New Hope. The first English colonists came from the Bay Colony and Plymouth Colony in Massachusetts in1636. Minister Thomas Hooker and his followers moved here after a disagreement with Massachusetts Bay. The name Connecticut was taken from a Native Indian phrase meaning “river whose water is driven by tides or winds.” -
Delaware Colonized
The first settlement in Delaware was made by the Dutch in 1631 but that was destroyed in a year. The Swedes then established the first permanent colonization in 1638 led by Peter Minuit. It was then taken by the English in 1664 for trade and profits. It was named after the Delaware River. -
North Carolina Colonized
North Carolina was first settled in 1584 on Roanoke Island. It was the first English settlement in the New World. By 1590, however, all of the colonists on the island had disappeared. The North Carolina Colony was founded in 1653 by the Virginia colonists. The first permanent English settlement in North Carolina occurred in 1655. The state was named in honor Charles IX of France and then King Charles I and King Charles II of England. -
South Carolina Colonized
The South Carolina Colony was founded in 1663 by eight English nobles with a Royal Charter from King Charles II. North and South Carolina were one colony until 1729. The state was named in honor Charles IX of France and then King Charles I and Charles II of England. -
New Jersey Colonized
In 1624 Dutch settlers were the first Europeans to settle in New Jersey. There was also a Swedish settlement in 1638. The area was then taken over by the English in 1664 by Lord Berkeley and Sir George Carteret. New Jersey was named after the English Channel Island of Jersey. -
Pennsylvania Colonized
Pennsylvania was colonized by Dutch and Swedish settlers. The Dutch were the first Europeans to occupy the land. in 1681 the land was granted to William Penn and the English colony was founded as a place of religious freedom for Quakers in 1682. The name is is a combination of the Latin word ' Sylvania ' meaning woodland together with Penn. -
Georgia Colonized
Gerogia was the last of the thirteen original colonies established by Great Britain. It was chartered in 1732 to General James Ogelthorpe and was settled in 1733 at what is now Savannah. Georgia was named after King George II of England. The terms of the charter granted by the king specified that the colony was to be named after the king.
