Invention of the cotton gin
In 1794, inventor Eli Whitney made the cotton gin so that it would be easier to pick apart the cotton and fibers better. Cotton was America's largest export in the mid-19th century. But with how big the cotton gin got Whitney did not get a lot of money for it.
