1900's The Jazz Era
At the turn of the century, Jazz flourished in Storyville, the red light district in New Orleans. Buddy Bolden is often credited for being the first of the great Jazz figures -- "the blowingest man since Gabriel." He ushered in an era which saw a long succession of artists who helped make New Orleans the capitol of Jazz. -
1910's The Blues Era
In 1910, Tin Pan Alley sold $2 billion worth of sheet music. Ragtime was so popular in that it replaced Jazz for a while however in 1914 "The Blues" took over -

1930's The Gospel Era
Blues man "Georgia Tom" Dorsey turned to religious music During the Great Depression. Dorsey became the first publisher of gospel music with the establishment of the Dorsey House of Music. Gospel was born. -
The BeBop Era
South Carolina native Dizzy Gillespie began an innovative style of trumpet performance that would come to be called BeBop. Rocky Mount, North Carolina native Thelonious Monk was a member of the adventurous musicians who liked to gather at Mintons in Harlem and contributed to the birth of Bebop. -
The R&B Era
In the early 1950s, Fat Domino began making the charts, first in
R&B, then in Pop. -

The Pop/Rap Era
The musical era of the 1990s was one filled with a variety of pop, rap, and alternative music artists as well as a plethora of one-hit wonders. It was a time when musical taste was as varied as the events that were happening at the time. Many of the most popular acts that emerged in the 1990's were bands and artists who enjoyed a type of resurgence in the mainstream music scene after their popularity had dwindled for a decade or so. -
The R&B Era
1999 may have been the year of the ultimate pop takeover, with Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, *NSYNC and Backstreet Boys dominating the airwaves. But it was 2000 that saw the peak of pop music, as the bubblegum hype spilled over to Europe.
