Theme 4 Migration

  • Jamestown

    Jamestown, the first American colony, was founded. This is significant because the success of the colony caused more migration to the colonies.

    Indentured Servitude

    Many young people came to America for free in exchange for work. Voluntary Migration, as a pull factor was that it was free for them to come to America.
  • Puritans come to the Colonies

    They settle in present-day New England. They leave England because they want to practice their own religion. This is somewhat in a way forced-migration
  • Period: to

    Slave Trade and Middle Passage

    Slaves started to be forcefully migrated from Africa. This caused a population disparity in Africa, leaving many women there, and allowing America to produce the amount of crops they they needed.
  • French and Indian War

    This war showed how vital land and expansion was so that more people could migrate to the United States
  • Proclamation of 1763

    Prevented migration west of the Appalachian Mountains. Caused outrage as it just caused more migration to the West, causing conflict.
  • US Independence

    Independence provided a pull factor to many people who didn't like the British.
  • Northwest Ordinance

    This showed the influence on migration on the United States by setting rules on how a state could be formed.

    Included a lot of wars, compromises, and forced migration, such as the Trail of Tears, Mexican-American war, and the Missouri Compromise
  • Louisana Purchase

    This increased the land of the United States, and allowed people to migrate for many reasons, most of which were agricultural.

    Indian Wars

    Conflicts between the Americans and the Natives caused Native Americans to migrate all over the country to their new homes, split up from their families. Causes new culture to be formed within the Natives.

    Reconstruction

    Many Northerners migrated to the South to help with rebuilding their economy. This causes a slight class division in the South, and African Americans continue to get discriminated, leading to the Great Migration.
  • The Completion of the Transcontinental Railroad

    Allowed people to migrate from coast to coast much easier.
  • Chinese Exclusion Act

    Due to the increased social impacts from Asian migration, this law was passed to stop migration from there.
  • Open Door Policy

    US did not want discrimination with trade and other countries. This is important because it influences the immigration of the Chinese.

    Immigration During the 1900's

    Many nationalities, including Italian, Middle Eastern and Nordic, immigrated to the United States. Many of them migrated due to bad conditions in their own country and opportunity in the US.
  • Great Migration

    Many African Americans move to the North due to discrimination, and in result causes the biggest migration within the US, and also creates more diversity in the North.
