    Vietnam War Begins
    The Vietnam War original began when the Vietnamese attack the French on September 2, 1945 so they could earn their independence. The U.S. only joined to stop the spread of communism so they joined and tried to help France stay in the fight.
  • Indochina War

    Indochina War
    For 8 years the U.S. helped France stay in the war. But the French finally surrendered after a 56-day battle at Dienbienphu, on September 2, 1954. When the French pulled they left the U.S. and South Vietnam (S.V.).

    On April 7,1954 President Eisenhower gave a speech over his idea called the Domino Theory “You have a row of dominoes set up. You knock over the first one, and what will happen to the last one is the certainty that it will go over very quickly.”

    The Vietcong were formed sometime during 1960 but they grew in strength cause of Diem’s iron fist ruling in South Vietnam Vietcong were supplied by North Vietnam to do hit-and-runs on South Vietnam, and the U.S. they used Guerilla fighting

    In 1962 the U.S. used a deadly chemical called Agent Orange which killed everything it touched leaving nothing left. But if it got on a person it would lead to many kinds of cancer and lead to birth defects on the local Vietnamese

    On August 1964 North Vietnamese had supposedly sunk U.S. Destroyers. The report could have been made up to draw the U.S. further in Vietnam. Many people who thought it was a lie were saying "Those reports were sending men to a early grave..."

    1. Early 1965 President Johnson ordered many bombings in North Vietnam in an attack called Operation Rolling Thunder. The bombings were to destroy Vietnamese factories in North Vietnam and one of its neighboring countries. The operation was to cut their soldiers off, but it had caused a Civil War in Vietnams neighboring countries

    First ground troops reach Vietnam
    March 1965 the U.S. sends 3,500 soldiers to protect their bases but the effect was that many civilians in SV did not want the U.S. here or their soldiers. But with a few years nearly ½ million soldiers were in Vietnam.

    Tet Offense videoJanuary 13, 1968 is the Vietnamese New Year, the Vietcong and North Vietnamese used it as a cover up to do a surprise attack in ever-major city in South Vietnam and captured the Ancient Capital of Hue. But on February 25 the siege on Hue ended

    On June 1969, Richard Nixon started to Vietnamization; this was to restore Peace with Honor in the U.S. for going into Vietnam and fighting a war. Vietnamization brought soldiers home, but left South Vietnam to an invasion from the North.

    On May 4,1970 there was an anti-war protest against the attack on Cambodia at Kent State University in Ohio. There were more students then soldiers. But a scared Soldier there fired upon the crowd leading the rest to have killed 2 students, and wounded 12

    The Watergate Scandal was when 5 men were arrested when they tried to break into the Democratic Office. It was set up by President Nixon to see what his opponent was planning but when the 5 men got caught they ad mitted they were paid hush many by the White House to never speak of it
