Bureau of Indian Affairs
An agency of our federal government that deals with native americans. The cause was needing a seperate agency to deal with the problems with native americans and effects were help torwards indians. -
Indian Removal Act
We forced tribes to leave their homelands so we could get acess to their lands. The effects of it were the Trail of Tears. -
Fort Laramie Treaty
A treatie between the U.S and representives from several indian tribes that guaranteed settlers safe passage through the oregon trail and the indians got annuity of $50,000 for 50 years. -
Homestead Act
Gave people who had never went against the government to be able to file for a federal land grant because they wanted to sell of the land in the west. The cause was all the extra land and effect was 1.6 million homesteads being created. -
Little Crows War
A war between the Dakota indians and the whites because they were in need of food and disliked whites. The result was lots of white civilians killed and Little Crow fled to Canada. -
Cheyenne Uprising
The Cheyenne indians had infertile land so they left the sand creek rservation. Then they were starving so they attacked settlers. -
Sand Creek Massacre
A 700 man Colorado militia attacked the quiet indian town of Cheyenne because they were mistaken as enemies. The effect of it was the survivors attacked the fort Camp Rankin with1000 warriors. -
Fetterman Massacre
Was a battle during Red Cloud's War in which the Lakota, Cheyenne, and Arapaho indians fought against the U.S. captain Fetterman. The aftermath was no white survivors and the indians had beat all of Fettermans men. -
Completion of Trans-Cont R.R
The frist R.R that went from coast to coast. The effects of it were it was much easier to travel across the U.S and more people moved out west. -
Comstock Lode
It was a lode of silver found in the Virginia range in Nevada and was the first major discovery of a large amount of silver. The impact was a large silver rush to the area. -
Indian Appropriations Act
Made groups of indians no longer recognized as independent nations. The results of it were that it made it easier for the federal government to obtain lands from indians. -
Camp Grant, AZ Apache massacre
An attack against Apache indians wholater surrendered to the U.S. The results were the people who took partin the massacre against the indians were put on trial and charged with murder. -
The Lakota War
A battle between the U.S. and the Lakota Sioux becuase they didn't want to leave their land. The effects of the war were the Lakota moving to reservations and some banded with the Cheyenne. -
Battle of Little Bighorn
A battle between the General George Custer and the Sioux indians. The Sioux indians defeated Custer and all of his men. -
Desert Land Act
Was to encourage the development of the western desert lands so people could apply for plots of land. The results were lots of fraud of people aquiring large amounts of land. -
Battle of Lincoln
A battle in Lincoln New Mexico bewteen McSweens regulators and the Murphy Dolan Faction. It lasted three days until soldiers came in to end it. The impact was a court case and some people getting warants like Billy the Kid but other getting amnesty. -
Pratt Boarding School
Richard Pratt found the school which was a school for native americans. The effects were helping indians learn better and not be isolated as much. -
A Century of Dishonhor by Hellen Hunt Jackson
Was written as an attempt to change the governments idea torwards native americans. The effects were changing the moral of Americans torwards native americans slightly but not as much as she wanted. -
Chinese Excluson Act
A federal law that made it so no chinese laborers could immigrate ti American. The impacts were no new Chinese could come to American and Chinese who already were in American faced deportation. -
Bill Cody's "Wild West Show"
They traveled lots of places doing circus like shows to entertain people. The effects were lots of sucess for Bill Cody and eventually getting the name Buffalo Bill. -
Red Cloud's War
A war between several indian tribes and the U.S. and happened because of the gold rush at the time. The impact was their tribes were eventually forced onto reservations. -
Capture of Geronimo
He was a captured and a POW many years. He appeared at various fairs while as a POW and became very famous. -
Edmunds-Tucker Act
This act was passed in regard to Polygamy. It allowed polygamy all together. The effects were it removed the LDS church and disenfranchised woman. -
Dawes Act
Allowed the president to survey American Indian land and divide into allotments for indivisual Indians. They made this because they felt the Indians had to leave behind their Indian heritage and many Americans didn't like them. The cause was the Indians not being able to adopt our culture and the effects were negative for the indians but we gained a lot of extra land. -
Capture of Nez Perce
After a short war the Nez Perce tribe finally surrendered since they were about to lose. The cause of was a three day standoff around their camp and the effects were the Nex Perce were allowed to go back to their reservation. -
Yosemite National Park
A U.S. national park and gained attention originally from the California gold rush. The impact of it was lots of tourism to it and a strive for protection for it. -
Wounded Knee Massacre
Atleast 150 Lakota indian tribe members were murdered because of a missfired shot by the indians. The effects were many of the white people around them were happy but left the indians at a loss. -
Forest Reserve Act
It is a law that allowed the president to set aside private forest reserves. The impact were it helped save some of our natural trees and preserve some. -
Turner Thesis
Was an idea by the historian Frederick Jackson Turner that he believed american democracy was formed by the frontier and that we should move the frontier line. The impact was it helped explain why America was so different from europe. -
Carey Act
It allowed private companies in the U.S. to create irrigation systems in the west. The impact of it wasnt that big because sereral states couldn't afford it.
