Introduces Jake and Delilah. Jake is a main character. At the end of the chapter Delilah dies giving birth to Amos. Amos becomes the main character for the book. Amos inherits the gift of dowsing from Jake. -

Mission at Pretty Water
Jake takes Amos to the mission, to his brother, Gil. Gil and Rebecca take care of Amos, until Rebecca dies. He then stays the Block family. Later, Jake picks up Amos to take to Bittersweet creek. With them comes another main character, Jake's wife, Blue Owl. -
Rebecca Dies
Rebecca dies due to the small pox. Amos believes the Indians did it. Because the Indians believe it is better to put a person out of their pain. Her death hits Amos hard. She was like the only mother he had. Ever since then, Amos has disliked them due to the belief that they killed his mother. -
Bittersweet Creek
Blue Owl, Jake, and Amos head back to Bittersweet Creek to go live in Jake's cabin. When they reach his cabin, Daisy, Delilah's little sister, and her husband, Homer, are living in his house. They talk for a while and stay there with them. Blue Owl wants them out, and eventually, Jake, Blue Owl, and Amos move out. -
Jake Dowses For 5 Years 1842-1847
Jake and his family go to Independence to find jobs for Jake to dowse. They spend the next few years roaming and dowsing wells. Some people did not like Blue Owl, even though she was Jake's wife. One man even made her stay far away from the well site and his house. Over this course of time Amos starts to warm up to Blue Owl. -
Head West
Daisy and Homer had a boy named Finn, who is now 6 years old, and Amos is 13 years old. Jake, Blue Owl, and Amos come back to Bittersweet Creek after 5 years of dowsing. They stay at the cabin for a while. Paul Ferguson says that Isaac Bolton, a trapper, wants another scout for his trip to the West. Jake is willing to go and takes Blue Owl and Amos with him.
