President Madison Takes Office
James Madison became elected president. This happened in Washington D.C. James Madison got elected since the president's term before him ran out. People also thought the United States honor was at stake and when Madison got elected the country felt a new sense of hope. Madison knew he could make changes to the government. -
War Hawks Take Power
Henry Clay & John C. Calhoun became the House of Represenitives. This had happened in Washington D.C. They got elected because the U.S wanted to go to war with Great Britain. War Hawks are people who like to go to war so they elected them because the country wanted to go to war with Britain. -
Relations with Great Britain Worsen
America and Great Britain's relationship started to get worse by the day. All of this happened in the United States and in Britain. This started to happen because Britain put a blockade on the ports of trade. Both countries did not like each other so they shut down importing and exporting. -
Congress Declares War on Britain
The United States and Great Britain began a war. This had happened in the United States and in Europe. The United States wanted to go to war with Britain because the War Hawks love going to war and they were running the House of Represenitives. Also, the British put a blockade on a trade route so the Americans became furious. -
America is not Ready for War
The American Army was not ready for war against Britain when congress declared war on Britain. This had happened because the United States only had 16 warships and fewer than 7,000. Congress declared the war at a bad time since the U.S had nothing compared to the British to fight with. -

Britain set up blockades to stop the United States from trading with them. Britain did not want anything coming in and leaving the border. This made the U.S furious. -
Invasion of Canada
The Warhawks went up to Canada. They thought the Canadians would want to throw the British out of Detroit. This happened in Detroit and Canada. The Canadians did not want to get involved into the war. -
USS Constitution Scores a Victory
The USS Constitution Battle ship defeated the British warship. This Happened in at sea between the U.S and Britain. This happened because the U.S waqnted to breach the blockade Britain had made. -
Battle of Lake Erie
Oliver Hazzard Perry (American Commander) wanted control of Lake Erie. This happened in Put-in-Bay in the western part of the lake. The Americans wanted to drive the British out of Detroit. -
Battle of Horseshoe Bend
Andrew Jackson took control of the American army. The Creek Warriors attacked the American solders. This all happened on Horseshoe Bend. A treaty that Ameicans made, made the Creeks furious since it took away millions of acres away from the Creeks. -
Washington D.C Attacked and Burned
Dolly Madison (James Madison's wife) grabbed all of her husbands important papers. Great Britain wanted to burn the United States to the ground. They wanted to take the nations capital down first. Their target was the White House. This happened in Washinton D.C. -
Writing of the Star Spangled Banner
Francis Scott Key wrote the Star spangled banner. he wrote it in Washington D.C. It started out as a little poem on a piece of paper and the poem became popular by many people. After a while Congress made that poem the new National Anthem of the United States. -
Hartford convention
They were a group of Federalists. They were talking about the New England states wanted to withdrawl from the United States. They wanted out because the British blockade hurt New England trade badly. This meeting happened in Hartford, Connecticut. -
Treaty of Ghent
This treaty was made because Great Britain was tired of going to war. Britain did not want to fight anymore so they made a treaty. This treaty was made in Belgium. -
Battle of New Orleans
American General Andrew Jackson declared the final battle of the War of 1812. Britain and America were still fighting up to this day but then they finally stopped the war after the treaty was made. This battle happened in New Orleans.
