President Madison Takes Office
James Madison was elected as president in 1809.Relations with Britain were worsening and Americans honor was at stake. -
War Hawks Take Power

Congress Declares War on Britain
Native Americans in the Northwest started new attacks on frontier settlements. These actions caused the Congress to declare war on Britian in June. -
America is not Ready for War
America was sure they would win but then it became apparent the United States had become unprepared for war. Jefferson's cuts had made the military weak. -
Britain Blockades American Ports
By 1814 Britain had 135 warships blocking american ports. After reinforcing their troops, the British were able toclose all American ports. -
Ivasion of Canada
In July, Americans troops under General William Hull invaded Canada. In Hull's confusion British commander General Issac Brock defeated them. -
USS Constitution Scores a Victory
USS Constitution defeated the British warship Guerriere. The USS Constitution was thought to be iron because bullets bounced off of it. -
Battle of Lake Erie
During the Battle of Lake Erie, the Americans flagship was badly damaged. The General switched ships and continued to fight until the battle was over. Creek warriors attacked several southern settlements. -
Battle of Horsehoe Bend
Jackson defeated the creeks. Andrew Jackson also took control of Georgia. Then a treaty was signed to end the battle. -
Washington D.C Attacked and Burned
Britain's new stratage was to attack the capital. They also set fire to the buildings. The American army was to weak to defend Washington. -
Writing of the Star Spangled Banner
The Star Spangled Banner was written on the back of an envolope. The song originated as a poem it became popular and was turned into a song. Later on it became the natoinal anthem. -
Hartford Convention
The Hartford Convention suggested that the New England states withdraw from the United States. While delegates debated, news of the peace treaty arrived and the Hartford Convention was over. -
Treaty of Ghent
The treaty of Ghent was the treaty that ended the war. News of the treaty took several weeks to reach thye United States. In that time, the two sides fought one more battle. -
Battle of New Orleans
The last battle of the War of 1812. The Americans were victorious in this final battle in New Orleans.
