Presdient Madison Takes Office
Presdient Madison takes office during this time period. The Americans are mad at the Britsh for arming the Native Americans in the Northwest. Americans were also resenting the impressment of American Sailors from the British. The Americans felt like there honor was at stake. They felt a new nationalism arriving. -
War Hawks Take Power
Henry Clay from Kentucky and John C. Calhoun from South Carolina were both house representives, and two strong nationalists. there supporters were called war hawks. New England didn't want war, they thought it would hurt American trade. -
Relations with Great Britian Worsen
The relation worsened in the early months. Britian was going to continue impressement in the spring. There are also new attacks from the Native Americans in the North West on frontier settlements. -
Congress Declares War on Britian
This is not a good time for Britian. But they would still fight. Britian provided Native Americans with support for protecting Canada. They were still at war with Europe. -
America is not Ready for War
The Americans were confident they would win. Speding cuts weakened the American Military strength. The Navy only had six-teen warships ready for battle. There was a small army with less than seven thousand men. -
Britian Blockades American Ports
One hundred and thirty five war ships blocked the American ports. The ports were closed by the wars end. And there was a major sea battle. -
Invasion of Canada
General William Hull invaded from Detroit. He retreated because he had such a small amount of men. General Isaac Brock and Native Americans made Hull surender,after they followed and surrounded him. It was a very serious defeat. -
USS Constitution Scores a Victory
There was a major sea battle in the beginning. There was a defeat of British ships. It was the Consttution vs. the Guerriere. The artillery on British weapons were no match against U.S. ships. -
Battle of Lake Erie
The battle was three hours long. It took place in Put-In-Bay, in the western part of the lake. Oliver Hazard Perry fought until they won after "ship switching". The British forced to leave Detroit and retreat to Canada.General William Henry Harrison defeated them in th Battle of Thames. Tecumseh was killed in battle. Americans followed them back. -
Battle of Horseshoe Bend
The Native Americans were defeated in the South. Andrew Jackson took over forces on U.S. in Geogia. He defeted Creeks in Horseshoe Battle. A treaty is made and the Creeks are forced to give up millions of land. -
Washington, D.C. Attacked and Burned
The British had a strategy to attack and burn Washington. Jeffersons wife grabbed all his important papers and ran to the White House. They set fire to the White House because it wasn't being protected along with other buildings. -
Writing of the Star Spangled Banner
The song was written by Francis Scott Key. It was about the American flag still flying.he watched as the fort was attacked and by the British. It took place at Fort McHenry, Baltimore, At the city harbor.It is now known today as the national anthem. -
Hartford Convention
Delegates were snet to Hartford, Conneticut. They suggested New England secede from U.S. It ended quick with new news and the war was over. -
Treaty of Ghent
This was at Ghent, Belgium who were talking about peace. Things then returned to normal. It was on Christmas Eve and Britian wanted no more. The treaty was signed and two sided. -
Battle of New Orleans
A major battle happened before the news of the treaty arrived. Ameriavn forces under general Andrew Jackson. America won a stunning victory against British. The news to seven weeks until they heard about the treaty.
