Relations with Britain worsened steadily in the early months of 1812.
In the spring the British told the U.S. that they would continue impressing sailors.

The war was not at a good time for the British.
They were still in war in Europe.
Britain was not willing to meet American demands to avoid war. -
America is not Ready for War
When the war began America was confident they would win.
It soon became apparent that the U.S. was not prepared for war.
The navy was 16 war ships and the army was fewer than 7000 men. -
Britain Blockades American Ports
The British set up a blockade of the American coast.
By 1814 the British navy had 135 warships blockadeing American ports.
After reinforcing their navy the British were able to close all American ports. -
Invasion of Canada
Warhawks were demanding an invasion of Canada.
They expected Canadians to welcome the chance to throw British rule.
