  • Battle of Midway

    Battle of Midway
    *Was the turning point of the war
    *Chester A. Nimitz was the commander and sent his scouts to find the Japanese fleet
    * America caught the Japanese by surprise and killed four Aircraft carriers, one cruiser, and 250 planes
    *Allies stopped Japanese forces and began Island hopping (Which is Moving from one island to the other to take their territory).

  • Guadalcanal

    Guadalcanal
    *General MacArthur arrived in the Philippines with 178,00 men and 738 ships
    *First Japanese land defeat
    *The US begins to go on the offensive side
    *Americans continued to Island- hop

  • Philippine Sea

    Philippine Sea
    *The U.S fifth fleet went to the Marshall islands
    *Japanese Admiral Ozawa Jiaburo challenge his fleet by sending 430 planes launched from aircraft carriers
    *The Us had Already picked them up on radar and managed to shoot down more than 300 aircraft and sink two carriers
    *Only lost 29 planes in the process
    * Was known as the "Great Marianas Turkey Shoot"

  • Battle of Leyte Gulf

    Battle of Leyte Gulf
    *The Japanese use their entire fleet and used a new tactic call, the Kamikaze (Suicide plane)
    *The US only lost a total of 16 ships and damaged 80
    * The battle was a disaster for the Japanese, in three days they lost 3 battleships, four aircraft carriers, 13 cruisers, and almosts 500 planes.

    • The "Big Three" who was Churchill, Stalin and Rosevelt meet in a city called Yalta.
    • For eight days they discussed the matters of what they should do with Germany. *Planned for a new Post-War world *Feb 4, 1945 – Feb 11, 1945
  • Iwo Jima

    Iwo Jima
    *After retaking much of the Philippines they turned to Iwo Jima
    *Strategic position because it allowed them to load bombers at the island and have a straight flight to Japan
    *Over 20,700 Japanese men defended the island
    *Only 6000 Marines died taking the island
    *After countering the island Americans lifted the American Flad at the highest point of the island called Mt. Suribachi

  • Okinawa

    Okinawa
    *The Japenese unleashed more than 1,900 kamikaze attack the Allies.
    *They sank 30 ships and damaged 300 more.
    *Once they had made it on shore the battle lasted until June of 1945 where more than 7,600 American men died, but 110,000 Japenese lives were lost trying to defend their country.
    *Opened the way for an invasion on Japan

    Hiroshima
    *President Truman ordered the first atomic bomb to be released on Hiroshima on August 6. A B-29 bomber named Enola Gay released the bomb code-named "Little Boy".
    * Hiroshima was an important Japanese Military base.
    * After the bomb, they still refused to surrender.

    Nagasaki
    *Three days after the bombing of Hiroshima a second bomb was dropped code-named "Fat Man".
    * By the end of the year, over 200,000 had died as the result of injuries and radiation poisoning.

    *After this Emporer Hirohito order to have papers and made plans to surrender

    *We remember everyone that fought for freedom in WWII
  • Nuremburg Trials

    Nuremburg Trials
    *The defendants of Hitlers most trusted men went to court with the United States.
    *Later much lesser ranked men were given a trial in the US.
    *Over half of the men that were accused were sentenced to death right away, while others were sentenced to a lifetime in prison.
