    In 1947 more than 300 people were employed in the department store of J. Ballantyne & Co. At 3:31pm on 18 November, 1947, one of the salesmen employed in the store was told by a woman employee that smoke was coming up the stairs.

    The Tangiwai disaster occurred at 10:21 p.m. on 24 December 1953 when the Whangaehu River bridge collapsed beneath Wellington-to-Auckland express passenger train No. 626 at Tangiwai, in the central North Island of New Zealand.

    The Mount Erebus disaster occurred on 28 November 1979 when Air New Zealand Flight 901 (TE-901) flew into Mount Erebus on Ross Island, Antarctica, killing all 237 passengers and 20 crew on board.

    Rainbow Worrior

    Of the 734 people on the ship, 51 died. The Greenpeace ship Rainbow Warrior was blown up and sunk in Auckland by French secret-service agents in 1985, and one person was killed. The ship was towed to Northland and re-sunk, and it is now a place for divers to explore.
