  • Pentagon Papers

    This term related to the United States, and how they were involved politically and how they were involved relating to the military from 1945 to 1967.
  • The French Surrenders

    Vietminh troops trapped a group of French troops in a military base in Northwest Vietnam known as Dien Bien Phu for 55 days. The Vietminh troops then dug trenches to attack the French, limited their supplies, etc. After losing around 15,000 troops, the French finally surrendered.
  • The United States forms the Southeast Asia Treaty Organization (SEATO)

    This organization was formed to prevent the spreading of communism throughout Southeast Asia
  • Vietcong

    They were NLF guerrilla fighters that went around killing government officials and destroying bridges and roads.
  • The Students for a Democratic Society is founded

    It was founded at the University of Michigan, and was formed to fight against racism and poverty. As time went on, it was used to fight against ending the war in Vietnam
  • Congress passes the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution

    It authorized the president "to take all necessary measures to repel any armed attack against the forces of the United States and to prevent further aggression." The resolution also allowed Johnson to acquire United States troops to South Vietnam and allowed them to fight with North Vietnam.
  • Lyndon B. Johnson starts the Operation Rolling Thunder

    This was a bombing campaign against North Vietnam that lasted until October 31, 1968. Johnson intended for this campaign to persuade North Vietnam to stop supporting the Vietcong.
  • Martin Luther King Jr. gets assassinated

    He was a main leader in the civil rights movement, and wanted peace especially amongst the blacks and the whites. On March 4, 1968, his life came to an end after getting shot by a racist assassin in Memphis, Tennessee.
  • The signing of the Paris Peace Accords

    It was signed by the United States, South Vietnam, North Vietnam, and the Vietcong. They all agreed upon peace, and agreed that the United States troops had to leave South Vietnam.
  • War Powers Act

    The president had to let Congress know 48 hours ahead of time before forming an American foreign policy.
