Battle of Dein Bien Phu
The Vietnamese take over the French's post in Dien Bien Phu. The French commander orders a cease fire. This battle lasted 55 days and 8,000 French soliders were wounded and 3,000 were killed. The Viet Minh also lossed 8,000 soliders and 12,000 wounded. This battle proved to the French that they had competition. -
President JFK Sends Help
President John F. Kennedy sends help to South Vietnam. This help included new equipment, over 3,000 military advisors and support personal. -
U.S helicopters land in South Vietnam
United States helicopters landed in South Vietnam with 400 soliders that will stay to maintain and fly the helicopters. -
Operation Chopper
This marks America's first combat mission again Veitcong. Helicopters flown by U.S soliders took 1,000 Vietnam soliders to stronghold near Siagon. -
Vietcong Stands their Ground
Vietcong and their guerilla soilders ambush South Vietnam. The Vietcong stood up to all of America's machinery and the South Vietnam Soliders. In the end, around 400 South Vietnam soliders were wounded or killed and three American advisors were killed. -
Gulf of Tonkin
South Vietnamese bomb two small islands in Gulf of Tonkin. A U.S detroyer called, Maddox, which was a electronic spy ship was used to simulate an air attack to draw the North Vietnamese boats away from commandos. -
Retaliation Against North Vietnam
President Johnson ordered a retaliation against North Vietnam after being told that the U.S ship. Maddox had been attacked. Later the ship's captian said the ship was actually never attacked. During the retaliation, American jets bombed two naval bases and destroyed an oil facility. -
Gulf of Tonkin Resolution
U.S Congress passes the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution which gives President Johnson the power to take whatever actions necessary to protect southeast Asia. -
Bombing of Helicopter Base
After the U.S helicopter base was bombed, it left 9 Americans killed and more than 70 wounded. President Johnson orders the Navy fighter-bombers to attack the military targets inside North Vietnam. -
Operation Rolling Thunder
President Johnson authroizes Operation Rolling Thunder which is a long lasting bomb offensive. It was aimed at North Vietnam to stop them from supporting the guerillas in the South. -
First bombing of Operation Rolling Thunder
After many delays, this is the first bombing raid of Operation Rolling Thunder was finally flown. -
U.S offers Economic Aid
The United States offers North Vietnam economic aid in exchange for peace. North Vietnam rejects the offer. A few weeks later, President Johnson adds 60,000 more troops into Vietnam. Also shows more strength in gaining allies with Korea and Australia. -
Operation Starlite
Operation Starlite was the first major battle of the Vietnam War. This was one of the first battles the United States had resounding victory over. At least 700 Veitcong soilders were killed by artillery, ground forces, ships, and air support. The United States forces only lost 45 soliders and 200 wounded. -
Operation Crimp
This was the largest amount of American soliders deployed, over 8,000. Their goal was to find the Vietcong headquarters in Siagon area. The troops searched and repeatdly patrolled the area but never found the headquaters. -
Operation Cedar Falls
The reason for Operation Cedar Falls was to push the Vietcong out of a area called, The Iron Triangle. This was a 60 mile area near the Siagon River and Route 13. At least 20,000 soliders and American troops combined took over the Iron Triangle. Throughout 19 days they over took hige amounts of supplies, 72 Americans were killed, and over 720 Vietcong soliders were killed. -
Operation Pegasus
This battle lasted 77 days. It had been the biggest battle in the Vietnam War so far. -
Operation Rolling Thunder Ends
After three and a half years, Operation Rolling Thunder is over. This opreation lost over 900 American aircrafts, 818 pilots that were killed or missing, and hundreds in captivity. -
President Nixon Announces Withdrawl
President Nixon announced that he is withdrawning 25,000 U.S troops.
