Geneva Accords
The Geneva Accords pulled french troops out of the Indochina (split into 3 Asian countries), effectively ending their presence in southern Asia. Also, Vietnam was split at t 17th parallel until elections could be held. -
U.S supported coup against Diem
Diem was a strong anti-communist, elected as a leader in South Vietnam due to popular support. However, he introduced a corrupt government and was assassinated in a coup endorsed by the US military, against Kennedy's wishes. -
Operation Rolling Thunder begins
Operation Rolling Thunder was an American campaign attacking strategic NVA positions via bombs and air raids. It was the first sustained attack on North Vietnamese land, but the effectiveness is questioned. -
Tet Offensive
The Vietcong launched a massive attack in major South Vietnam cities including Saigon and the US embassy. The offensive was launched on the day of Tet, or the Vietnamese New Year. -
Woodstock Festival
A giant music festival that was held in upstate New York. The most popular bands at the time played and represented peace and love during the Vietnam War.. -
Invasion of Cambodia
The Hoh Chi Minh Trail cut into Cambodia, effectively allowing the Vietminh to supply the Vietcong deep in South Vietnam. President Nixon made a hard decision between allowing the Trail to continue, or to temporarily invade and bomb Cambodia. -
Fall of Saigon
The NVA had reached the outskirts of Saigon in South Vietnam by April 1975. The remaining Americans in Vietnam were airlifted out of the city.
