  • Independent Vietnam

    Independent Vietnam
    After World War 2, Ho Chi Minh decalres Vietnamese Independence. They divided themselves into Northern and Southern Vietnam. The North was a communist state while the South was a anti-communist state. It's important to note that the U.S. did not stand in the way of Vietnam spillitng itself up. (Slide 15/32 Backgrond on U.S. Involvement in Vietnam War).
  • Indochina War

    Indochina War
    War broke out between the French and Vietnamese. It's important because France focused on becoming wealthy and abosrobing fortune in the Indochina. Because the French decided to set up Vietnam. The french divided the nation. This is important because the Vietnamese were tired of the tyrannical rule of the French and decided to start a war.
  • Ho Chi Minh Trail

    Ho Chi Minh Trail
    The Ho Chi Minh Trail was created in order to become a supply route from North Vietnam to Vietcong forces in South Vietnam. It's significant in History because it was used to get troops and supplies into South Vietnam.
  • Gulf of Tonkin

    Gulf of Tonkin
    The North Vietnam confronted a US destroyer Vessel which resulted in a sea battle in the Gulf of Tonkin. Because of this event, President Lyndon B. Johnson granted assistance to SouthEast countries who were in dispute with communist Vietnam and other communist countries at the time. (Slide 24/32 Gulf of Tonkin Incident/ Resolution).

    Vietnam War Protests
    Peace activists and other intellectuals began war protests due tho the fact of U.S. involvement in the Vietnam War. All of the protests were prominent during 1965. This was important because many people wanted to ask to end the conlfict and withdraw the U.S. from the war.

    Lyndon B. Johnson
    • The Vietnam War took a toll on The Vietnam War because he had to make a lot of decisions. Because of the war, a lot of anti-protests got to his feelings and he became emotional. He did not want to fight the war to win; he was fighting not to lose under communist countries like China. This is important, because he wanted to protect America; he had a lot of decision making to do. He found himself trapped.

    • Lyndon Johnson, only one the first primary because of the Tet Offensive against an anti- war democrat. Lyndon Johnson drops out of the election campaign which shocks many people. (Slide 27/32 Shocks to Political Systems in 1968).
  • The Tet Offensive

    The Tet Offensive
    The North Vietnamese launched a suprise attack on South Vietnam and Americans. The Tet was supposed to be a truce fire in South East Asia. This event had made the U.S. realize that they will still struggle with the war and the war is far from over. (Slide 26/32 Tet Offensive- 1968).

    A lot of events, scared and schocked Americans. The Tet Offensive recognized that things were not adding up in Vietnam. This is important because a lot of people were scared about being drafted and fighting the war. (Slide 27/32 Shocks to Political System in 1968).
  • Leaders

    Leaders
    Because Lyndon B. Johnson dropped out and Robert Kennedy was assissinated, Hubert Humphrey stepped up to lead. He a had a repuation of a reformer. He had reservations about the Vietnam war, but since he was on LBJ's team, he still had to support the conflict. This event, made people want to encourage democrats to make a different choice about the war. (Slide 27/32 Shocks to Political system in 1968).
  • Last troops withdrawn from Vietnam.

    Last troops withdrawn from Vietnam.
    During this period of time, the remaining U.S. troops in Vietnam were withdrawed. The last couple of combat soldiers finally were able to leave South Vietnam. This signifies that the war was officially over. It also recognizes all of the casualties and M.I.A.s during the war.
  • End of the War

    End of the War
    The last few Americans depart Saigon. The red and blue Viet Cong flag flew from the Presidential Palace. This event is significant because it recognized that the war was over and Ho Chi Minh proposed to unconditional surrender.

    In Washington D.C. a Vietnam Veterans Memorial is dedicated.This memorial recognizes all the American who died and gave their lives to our country during the Vietnam War. It is important in history, because it recognizes all the brave soldiers who fought for the U.S. and sacrificed their lives in war.
