The USSR also sends aid to North Vietnam. -
Vietcong
The Vietcong was formed. It was a North vietnamese army that fought South Vietnam and US Military. -
President Kennedy sends more troops to South Vietnam
They bring weapons that are much more advanced. President Kennedy also sends more than 300 military advisors. -
LBJ becomes president.
He has a forceful approach on the Vietnam War. He wanted to get out of Vietnam, but he wanted to go out winning. -
Gulf of Tonkin Incident and Resolution
An American destroyer ship was attacked near the coast of North Vietnam by North Vietnamese ships. LBJ then ordered to attack North Vietnam naval bases. -
Tet Offensive
This was a series of surprise attacks done by the Vietcong and they happened in major cities and military bases all over South Vietnam. -
Mai Lai Massacre
It was the mass murder of between 350-500 unarmed civilians in South Vietnam done by Americans. Most of the civilians were tortured or beaten. This changed Americas outlook on the war. -
Fall of the Saigon
North Vietnam took over the South Vietnam capital, Saigon. The city was renamed Ho Chi Minh City after the communist leader, Ho Chi Minh. This ended the war. -
May 4 Massacre
People were protesting the war on the Kent State campus in Ohio when the National Guard shot at unarmed college students. 4 were killed and 9 were wounded.
