United States Resumes Bombing
The North Vietnamese don't respond to the US peace attempt so the United States resumes bombing them. -
The First Major United States Offensive
The first major US offensive action of the war is taken by 3000 troops of the 173rd Airborne Division and 800 Australian troops. The troops were to sweep Zone D, but failed to make any contact with the Viet Cong. -
United States Raid In North Vietnam
United States aircraft raids 115 points in North Vietnam to interdict supply lines. This is one of the heaviest raids of the war. -
Halt in Bombing
The United States halts the bombing of North Vietnam. During the halt the United States engages in a massive peace offensive. The North Vietnamese do not agree and after 37 days President Johnson announces that the bombing will resume. -
Operation Cedar Falls
The goal of the operation is to rout out Viet Cong base camps in the Iron Triangle. The operation is successful in uncovering large caches of arms and other equipment. -

The United States base camp at Con Thien is attacked by North Vietnamese troops. -
Viet Cong Repels at Loc Ninh
United States special forces at Loc Ninh are attacked by the Viet Cong. The special forces are quickly reinforced, and more than 900 Viet Cong are killed during the attack. This attack lasted a total of 4 days. -
Battle of Khe Sanh
Over 100,000 tons of bombs were dropped until mid April by U.S aircrafts. During the battle, a massive aerial bombardment campaign was launched by the U.S. Air Force to support the Marine base. -

The United States starts the secret bombing of Cambodia. -
Bombs Dropped Near the DMZ
Between North and South Vietnam, more than 1,000 tons of bombs are dropped on North Vietnamese targets near the DMZ. -
Withdraw of Troops Begins
Nixon begins withdrawing troops from Vietnam. By the end of the year, US troops are down to 479,000 soldiers.
