The purpose of the conference was to discuess the dividing of Germany, the formation of the United Nations, German war reparations, Soviet entry into Japan, and the future of Poland. The Yalta Conference marked the begining of te Cold War because the agenda items discussed where major fronts of the Cold War. -
The Berlin Blockade and Airlift was a significant event in the Cold War.

During 1948 West Berlin was in a state of need. For a short time the Soviet Union had allowed the Allied Powers to help Berlin by delivering supplies. Stalin the leader of the SOviet Union later decided to block the highways that were being used which became the Berlin Blockade. -

Lecture Slide 6 After Stalin decided to close off supply routes to West Berlin, the United States and England worked together to create a massive airlif that dropped supplies into Berlin using parachutes. This went on for several months until Stalin realized that the airlifts were making the Allies look like heros to the people in West Berlin. -
The NATO was formed in 1949 by many of the Western European Countries.
Lecture Slide 7In 1949 the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) was formed. Its purpose was to prevent another even such as World War II from happening, for example if any of the conries involved in the NATO was attacked, the other would come to its defense. -
In the early 1950's Korea was starting to take part of the Cold War.
Lecture Slide 8During the early 1950's the focus of the cold was was moving into Asia. North Korea was set up as a communist state and a client of the Soviet Union and the communist Chinese. South Korea was a client of hte United States and although they were not democratic, they were anticommunists. In 1950 North Korea Attacked South Korea which allowed Truman to enforce his fundemental foreign policy doctrine that expressed the idea of the containment of the spread of communism. -
The Warsaw pact fo 1955 was a response to the NATO.
Lecture Slide 7In May 14, 1955 the Soviet Union responsed to the NATO woth the creation of the Warsaw Pact. These were divisions of armed camps in command of the Soviet Union as a counter measure for the NATO. This pact was similar to the NATO because it called on member states to come to the defense of other memebr states if they were to be attacked by an outside force. -

One was an unnmaned satellite and the other put the first organic organism in space which was a dog. This was a real concern to people because they feared that this event would tip the scale of power toward the Soviet Union's side in the cold war. During the early 1960's the Soviet Union built a wall to isolate West Berlin from East Germany.
Lecture Slide 6 In 1961 while JFK was stil president, the soviets built a series of fortifications that became known as The Berlin Wall.This wall was aimed to cut off West Berlin from the larger Soviet controlled zone of East Germany. This was a condemnation of communism because they had to build a wall not to keep enemies out but to keep their own citizens in. -
In 1962 the World waited while on the verge of nuclear war.
JFK Library The world was at an edge for thirteen days in October 1962. During this time, American U-2 spy plane secretly photographed nuclear missile sites being built by the Soviet Union in Cuba. Kennedy meet with his advisors and set up a ring blockade og ships around Cuba. The aim was to prevent Soviet Union from bringing more military weapons to Cuba. So for 13 days the worldwaited while on the verge to nuclear war. -
The SALT treaty was created by President Nixon.
ColdWar.comDuring January 1972, President Nixon created a treaty known as the Strategic Arms Limitation Treaty (SALT). This treaty included regulations of antiballistic missiles that could potentially destroy other antiballistic missiles launched by opposing countries. This treaty also limited the two powers to only one launching area for ABM's and 100 interceptor missiles. After the Cuban Missile Crisis it was important for these weapons to be regulated for the safety of the whole world. -
The Berlin Wall separated Berlin for 30 years.
WikiFor 28 years the 30 mile long Berlin Wall had split the city in two by dividing it with two million tons of concrete. November 9, 1989 was marked the day that the Berlin Wall fell although it was not entirely taken down at one time. The East German regime announced the opening of the ten new border crossings the weekend that followed including Potsdamer Platz, Glienicker Bruke, and Bernauer Strabe. This was significant to the cold war because it ended communism in that part of Europe. -
Shortly after the destruction of the Berlin Wall East and West Germany were reunited.
WikiIn 1990 the German reunification took place. In May 199 the East German regime started to go on a downward spiral, this caused many people form East Germany to flee to West Germany. The peaceful revolution took place thereafter and it resulted in the first free elections on March 18, 1990. The elections led to the signing of the Unification Treaty. This was significant to the cold war because the separation of Germany was one of the many reasons it started. -
ON February 25, 1991 the defense ministers of the Warsaw Treaty Organization met to close down the pact.
SovietHistory The Warsaw pact crumbled in 1991 because it served as a prop for the very unpopular Communist regimes of Eastern Europe and it became obsolete once non-Communists came to power. This was a significant event during the Cold War because the closing of the Warsaw pact meant that the Soviet Union was losing power in Europe. -

o The fall of the Soviet Union on August of 1991 marked the end of the Cold War. The regime had begun to lose power when Mikhaol Gorbachev came to power in 1985. The new leader of the Soviet Union practiced openness and the restructuring of society while he was in power. From this point on the USSR signed treaties to disarm broth superpowers and the Soviets withdrew from Afghanistan. This marked the end of the cold war.
