The Wilmot Proviso was a propasal made by David Wilmot that stated that the territory acquired in the Mexican War should be open to slavery. This proposal angered many southerners because their main work force was made up of slaves. Slavery was also the south's main source of income at the time. -
Popular Sovereignty
Doctrine intended to let citizens decide wether or not to allow slavery in the newly found territories. -

This document also added California into the Union as a free state and created a territorial government in Utah. Settled the boundary dispute between Texas and New Mexico. -

Law passed by congress that caused escaped slaves in the north to be trialed by jury before being sent back to their owners. -
