Seperated states
In the early 1800's, Italy was divided into seperate states. An italian king ruled Sardiania in the north, but Austria ruled the other northern states. -
Nationalism Grew
As nationalism grew, more and more itailians embraced the idea of as unifiying as one country. -
Nationalist Efforts
Nationalist's efforts repeately failed, however, until Camillo Di Cavour became prime minister of Sardinia. -
Camillio Di Cavour
Cavour modernized Sardinia's army, formed shrewd alliances, and fought a war that drove Austrians to the north. -
Giussepe Garibaldi
The other italian states in the region then united with Sardinia. The same year Giussepe Garibladi gathered more than 1,000 passionate followers and overthrew the goverment in Sicily. A few months later Garibaldi and Cavour joined their lands together. -
Italy a United Kingdom
In 1861 Italy bacame a united kingdom. Ten years later Rome became its capital.
