If needed, they would use knives, however digging in with all ten digits was the common method of transferring food from table to mouth. So, next time your parent tells you to "eat properly" just remind them that in ancient times, people ate with their hands. -

A famous bride from Greece upset the church and religious individuals by introducing the world to using a fork instead of one's fingers. The fork at her wedding was made of pure gold. Priests were upset because this went against the idea that God had "provided man with natural forks- his fingers (Bramen)."
