Maria Hertogh Riots
This riot revolves around a custodial fight between the Dutch and the Muslim community about Maria Hertogh, a young girl who was married to a Malay local and was under care of Che Aminah, a Muslim individual who took care of Maria during the war. The riot was sparked when the Muslim side of the appeal lost to the Europeans. Convinced that the court was siding with the Dutch, they were enraged and went on rampages , killing any Europeans and even Eurasians on sight. -
Anti-National Service Riots
This riots occured when the British colonial passed on the National Service Ordinance which required all males aged 18-20 to sign up for National Service.Which led Chinese school students to protest. On the day of the dateline, the Chinese students still didn't sign up and instead went to protest. Chief secretery William Goode went to meet the affected body but instead of peace, It led to a fight where 50 students were injured. -
Anti NS Riots cause
The cause of the riot other then the need to sign up for NS was communist who used the students to try and get rid of the British and make Singapore a communist nation.(i) Some overage students had been forced to miss examinations or leave school as a result of a call up,
(ii) miscommunication and translation regarding the term "National Service" that resulted in adverse sentiments among these Chinese Middle School students
(iii) the lack of documents sent young men to explain the purpose of NS -

Bus drivers went on strike and blocked off many roads during the riots causing many problems -
Merdeka
Merdeka means Independence in Malay.The Merdeka Talks were instrumental in bringing Singapore towards internal self-government, the necessary first step towards eventual independence. These talks were initiated by the Labour Front Government, led by Chief Minister David Marshall, who came into power following their victory in the Singapore general elections of 1955.Soon ,Marshall resigned as Chief Minister, and Lim took over.
