What does the new medium retrieve from the past?
MP3s, Walkmans and portable CD players were all desperately trying to make a way for music to become portable. iPod took this idea and created a successful brand that helped the public make music portable. -
iPods become compatible with Windows

3rd Generation iPod
Apple announced the improvements made to the iPod which included a scroll wheel, a new dock connector for PCs and lithium-ion batteries. -
Introduction of iTunes
In the Summer of 2003 Apple introduced iTunes which meant that music could now only come from this program to be played on the 3rd genration iPod. iTunes also became available for PC users. -
The iPod Mini
The iPod mini had a capacity of 4GB and came in 5 colours. The scroll wheel was rearranged and it had a smaller screen. -
2nd Generation iPod Mini
The second generation had a longer battery life (10 hours longer) and could now hold 6GB. -
4th Generation iPod Classic
The 4th Generation iPod Classic now has colour and the ability to view pictures. Up to 60GB of space is available on this product. -
Introduction of the iPod Nano
The iPod Nano is introduced to replace the iPod Mini. The iPod Nano results in 6 different generations. -
5th Generation iPod Classic
This generation had a full redesign with a slimmer and a larger screen. up to 80GB of space is now available. -

iPod had been around for 4 years already but only really became popular in 2005. -
What does the new medium reverse or flip into?
The iPod flipped into the iPhone and later the iPad. While iPods are still common the iPhone is a place to have your music and phone in one place which is efficient and convenient. -
6th Generation iPod Classic
Silver has now replaced white as the Classic colour and 160GB of space is now available. -
Introduction of the iPod Touch
First iPod to include wi-fi and a multi-touch interface. 32GB of space available. -
5th Generation Nano
First iPod to include a video camera. Also includes speakers to be played aloud. -
6th Generation Nano
First iPod to include a multiple touch screen. Smallest iPod released with 16GB of space available. -
4th Generation iPod Touch
Thinner design which now includes FaceTime and HD video recording. 64GB of space available. -
What does the new medium enhance?
The iPod and Apple enhanced the music industry. Through iTunes music became easily accessible and artists have the chance to eet their music out there without having to produce CDs which may never be seen. The digitalization of music has greatly helped with smaller bands and artists being discovered. -

Apple has now expanded to iPhones, varies models of iPods and the iPad. Apple products are known worldwide and it is rare to meet someone who does not own some kind of Apple product the most common being the iPod of course. -
What does the new medium make obsolete?
Since their invention in 2001 iPods have made a series of products obsolete. For example MP3 players, Walkmans, CDs, etc. Apple will continue to progress and produce and in turn make their own products obsolete as their technology improves.
