The Beginning
when Marc Randolph and Reed Hastings heard about DVDs being introduced into the united states, they wanted to test and see if they could mail those instead of VHS tapes. -
The Subscription
after they both began to see a rise in their business, Marc and Reed decided to introduce a subscription option. this would allow people to, instead of just buying DVDs for $4 plus a $2 shipping fee, they could just pay the monthly fee and order unlimited amounts of DVDs. -
The Subscription Part 2
Netlfix’s business model of subscriptions was strengthened as it started its Unlimited Movie Rental program. This ‘All-You-Can-Watch’ subscription model, at just $19.95 per month, offered customers unlimited movie rentals which allowed people to receive up to 4 DVDs at a time. this was also when they offered their one-millionth rental. -
Redbox Influence
a service called Redbox was launched, which caught the attention of Netflix's founding executive Mitch Lowe. this gave him a great idea to introduce the idea of mass renting the DVDs. -
Competition
Netflix would face much competition with Blockbuster over their DVD rental services. blockbuster seemed to do way better than Netflix when they started because people found it more convenient to go into a store than order it through the mail. -
The Billionth DVD
This was a huge deal for Netflix as a company. it marked them selling their billionth DVD as a DVD mailing service. it took them about 7 1/2 years to achieve this goal. this would be when the company decided to make their transition to put the movies online.
fun fact, they achieved this goal about 7 months more for Mcdonalds to sell their billionth burger. -
The Competition Part 2
At this time another competitor would enter the circle of streaming services. Hulu was the same as Blockbuster, except this service was entirely online and free besides being supported by ads. -
Netflix Originals
This is when Netflix decided to release their first-ever original series: Lilyhammer. this was the first ever series on Netflix that was original to the website and that was only available to watch on Netflix. -
Going International
Netflix finally releases internationally starting with Canada. after a while, they would eventually expand to being available anywhere in the world.
