The First Puritans Arrive
They came for religious reasons. They didn't want to leave the church of England but they wanted to do what they believed in instead of what the King believed in. The Puritans wanted to make the church purer so they called themselves the Puritans. They later built Salem, a village on Massachusetts Bay. -
John Wintrop Arrives
In the Summer of 1630, John Wintrop lead the 2nd group of Puritans to Massachusetts Bay Colony. He named his group's settlement Boston after a town in England. John Windthrop was later elected the governor of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. -
Maryland is Founded

Disagreements with Church and Goverment in Massachusetts
Anne Hutchinson and Roger Williams were two people who thought that the Puritan church should be separate from the colony's goverment. Puritan Leaders leaders later voted to expel Williams from Massachusetts. -

Maryland later passed the Toleration Act in 1649 giving religious freedom to all Christians. -

King Phillip's War
Disagreement over land led to a war between the colonists and the Native Americans. Metcomet A.K.A. King Phillip was the leader of the Wampanoag tribe. They united many tribes to fight against the colonist Hundreds of colonists and thousands of Native Americans including Metacomet were killed during that time period. -
Pennsylvania is Founded
An English quaker named William Penn got approval to start a colony. That colony is what is now Pennslyvania. He was later named the owner of Delaware. William Penn also wrote the book The Frame of Goverment of Pennslyvania. The book gave people freedom of speech, freedom of religion, and the right to a trial by jury. -
Middle Passage
Trading ships often carrying goods and raw materials also carried slaves from Central and Western Africa. Millions of slaves on the ships were forced to travel across the Atlantic Ocean from Afirca to the English Colonies. -
North and South Carolina
In 1712, Carolina was split into two colonies, North and South Carolina. -
Great Awakening
In 1720, new religious movement begins. It "awakened" many people's interest in religion. Poor people, women, and even enslaved people started taking part in their own religious gatherings. -
